Sent it to someone who got half the clips to work. Half are just corrupt. On the FS-100, I can see that happening, although under rare conditions. I'd have sent it in for repair, but the back ups we did on P2 cards were corrupt, too.
First time I swapped out P2 cards live during an interview. It was a royal PITA, if you you ask me. Why do tapeless if it's more: work, expensive, unreliable, time consuming? I thought it was supposed to be cheaper, faster, easier. Guess I was wrong about that!
What I lost, last person of a tribe, very, very old, the history in her head will die with her soon, this was my one and only shot at this interview, one and only opportunity for anyone to get these stories from her. I had to kiss so much butt and jump through so many hoops just to get her to consent, it was tough. This has severely shaken my trust of P2 and tapeless acquisition for very important footage.
As soon as I can come up with another, more stable, reliable solution for my documentary, I'll be picking up the pieces of this major production explosion.
Super disappointed. Local Panny service center finds nothing wrong with the cam. Very disappointed. Not to mention the huge battles we're having with noise, even in day light shots. I hit a brick wall, I'm desperately searching for HD solutions, may have to go back to the DVX. At least it was reliable and didn't have the major noise problems to fight with. DVX has noise issues, but only in low light, not in bright light, like the HVX seems to have.
Not sure, weighing options. Just super disappointed, very devastated emotionally and my documentary has taken a HUGE hit. Doc backers are really unhappy, it has had such a wide effect, I'm simply at a loss as to how to handle this. I'm NOT asking for advice, I have all the advice I can deal with. 90% of it is stuff I already know anyway.
What causes so much noise even in day light shots? I'm baffled. Well, I'm not, just baffled as to how so many of y'all shoot without having to jump through hoops to get rid of the noise in light, well lit areas?
May break down and to HDV. Who knows, but losing such valuable footage, well, I'm really wanting to go back to tape. At least it's more reliable.
Really, really sorry to hear this.
Do you find the HVX more noicy than the DVX even in DV/DVCPRO 50 mode?
I never used the DVX but had to back to my old love - PD-150 (It's true, I really loved that cam - blush) and found it close to unusefull for all but one thing: Lowlight capacity.
XDCAM HD seems very reliable, even though that's a no - no to admit on this forum.
Anyways: Best of luck!
And I really admire your stamina as an advicor on this forum.
The "Authorative but just" approach to FCP coaching is quite ... cool!
It's highly appreciated!
That's why I run the HVX straight to my AJ-1200 every card shot, from the card, and record onto DVCPro HD tapes (we have lots of cards because of this). We only use the HVX when we need small size, but no one has been overally thrilled with its quality. I'd much rather use Panny's 900 for a smaller, more cost effective HD solution. Though I imagine that's still far to steep for most people.
And I dunno about the XDCam gun, had a local guy calling me (and others I know) having a world of headache with it. I can't recall the problem, but recall he was in quite a huff about having to redo stuff later on. Could totally be something boneheaded on his part though too maybe, I don't know enough about what the problem was or XDC for that matter. Anyway.
BenB,
That's horrible to hear, man. I haven't been on this board for very long, but you seem to be someone who cares a lot and is very passionate about his work (and helping others) and I can't even imagine what a kick in the gut this has been. On the bright side, once you recover from this incident it'll make a "triumph over adversity" story for the extras on the DVD.
gunleik,
I haven't used XDCAM HD w/FCP, but it was used on the ABC reality show "The One: Making a Music Star" (I was an AE) along with Avid and I have no complaints about it. If anything it's the best of both worlds. You have a reliable hardcopy (like a tape) but the speed and convenience of non-linear access (like tapless). The only downside we encountered was the version of Avid we were running didn't support XDCAM's faster than real time import, so we had to ingest each disc in realtime, but it was still faster than tape 'cause we didn't have shuttle through the whole thing we could just skip around just like on a DVD or CD.
