"Behind The Seen": a must-read!

Hi everyone.

Just wanted to drop a post about this amazing book.
Even though it deals specifically with the implementation of Final Cut Pro on the film "Cold Mountain", it is a valuable read for anyone doing what we all aim to do here.

It is a very detailed and, dare I say, affectionate account of the entire editing process (helmed by the great Walter Murch) on this film.
It was done entirely on FCP and, in fact, was begun in FCP 3!
Granted FCP had been used quite a lot in television and even some smaller features.
The author details how Murch approached Steve Jobs about this and how several people (a few of them from Pixar) tried to dissuade him as they felt Final Cut wasn't ready for such a task. But, Murch pressed on, excited by the challenge of breaking new ground and using off-the-shelf software on an 80 million dollar project. Digital Film Tree played an important role as well.
He even requested a beta version of FCP 4 to have use of some of the features it would provide that were lacking in version 3.

This book will inspire you to make your movie.
Go get it... now!

Re: "Behind The Seen": a must-read!

I had to dig this post up - 11 pages back, baby :) - as I just finished this really good book as well. This is not a technical book per se, but an adventure story about the process of shooting and editing a movie, and a big one at that.

Don't worry you PC users, this isn't an Apple/FCP droolfest. In fact, my beloved Apple tee'd me off a couple of times while reading. This is about the mind and process of the incomparable Walter Murch (including Anthony Minghella and the rest of the team).

The book offered numerous great quotes and ideas... I will definitely edit different from now on. Ok, I'm gushing like a schoolgirl. Read it. It's good! :)

It's funny you mention this because my film 102 teacher is friends with Walter Murch and mentioned that Walter called him to ask what he thought about it. My teacher had edited a tv feature on FCP so he was asking some questions about it.

Re: "Behind The Seen": a must-read!

I'm reading this right now and so far it's pretty good. Not as informative as In the Blink of an Eye and Conversations, but still a good read about Murch's experience in getting Final Cut to work on an expensive hollywood feature.

If you're serious about editing In the Blink of an Eye is your bible. I also really enjoyed Conversations: Walter Murch and the art of editing. Both are great reads.
