Beginning Pro-Audio - Tips, Help, ANYTHING Needed!

I plan on renting a Sennheiser MKH-416 with shock mount, softie, and an 18" XLR to use with my DVX100b in the near future. I also plan on renting a Palopole 12' Wired Carbon-Fiber Boom Pole. So far, this is all I have planned to use for this little project. As I am a beginner with pro-audio, I'm simply requesting help on getting started. Anything would be helpful. Anything about headphones, connections, positioning the mic, extra accessories, etc. ANYTHING!

And yes, I have searched the forum high and low, and to no avail, I have found no thread pertaining to exactly what I'm asking.

So this is it. Beginning Pro-Audio with the DVX.

Give me ALL you can. Please (and thanks)!

What wabbit suggested is VERY good! Get a book and learn the basics there. From what you are writing you are getting some good gear, so it will be how you use it that will define the outcome. Also, once you read that book (or any other) you may find yourself wanting more or different microphones.
As others have suggested in other threads; if this is for a critical upcoming project, it may be best to hire a 'sound guy/gal' to do the job.....from whom you can learn of course.
If you DO want to do it all yourself, maybe rule number one might help: get the mic as close to the audio source as possible.

I'd suggest that the 18" XLR cable will render the boompole pretty useless... do you mean 18 feet? Think about how foar you imagine the end of the boompole being from the camera, add a bunch for safety, and go with that! The 18" may be OK for on-camera mounting... but may be too long.

We actually have two threads that already address these questions, top to bottom, inside out, left to right, and everything in between. You'll find everything including lots of people chiming in and going through everything...

Read the Audio Tutorial Thread

Read the Everything I Know About Mics Thread

I will repeat my request again to the powers that be in this forum - can we please get these stuck (or whatever the term is) so they are always at the top of the forum? There is benefit to all the newbies (and some of us "oldies" that like to review every now and then) so they will see these threads and (hopefully) read them before asking questions...

Thanks!!!

Phil

copy the link, and change the "V3" to "V6" i think that will fix it.

No offense meant, mr giraffe, but there are HUNDREDS of threads on here that deal with headphones, mic positioning and the other things you have asked about. i agree, get the book, but also dont be afraid to dig - theres loads of stuff here you cant possibly have read yet. :)

good luck,
tim

ps - good choice on the 416, just remember, it can be unforgiving if you arent precise with aiming it.
