Beginner's question - which software??

Hi all,
I am trying to learn the trick of the amateur filmmaking trade and I have started to embark on my own projects. I recently bought a Panasonic GH1 camera which I am delighted with. I shot my first short film two months ago and edited on my friend's Final Cut Pro using his Mac. The fact that I wanna take things to the next step, I must now invest in my own film editing/production software and I don't know where to start......

My intention is to shot a full feature length action film (explosions and guns) over the next year or two beginning this January. So far I have invested in my camera (GH1), external audio recorder plus external mics and the props/costumes, etc. for this film. You can image how much money these all cost me so far. Next and most importantly is to get editing/production software.

The specs of my computer are: Dell Inspiron 530S with a 2.2Ghz processor with 2GB of RAM and has Windows XP.

Without having to upgrade my computer at a great cost, what is the best choice film editing/production software for my intended project? I understand that I'll probably need to get After Effects with Andrew Kramer's Action Essentials 2 for effects such as muzzle flashes and explosions but what would be my best choice of editing software to use with these that wouldn't be overly expensive. I was thinking maybe Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 or maybe Adobe Premiere Elements? I don't think I'd be able to afford Sony Vegas 9 or Adobe Premiere Pro, especially when I have to buy After Effects and Action Essentials. And can After Effects be used with Sony Vegas software?

Any suggestions or advice?

Might as well go with Adobe since you'll be using AE anyway. I have FCP and AE, but if you're on a PC you might as well go with Adobe. If you're smart get the whole Premiere, AE and Photoshop package deal. You'll probably need AE and P.shop anyway.

It depends on what you're comfortable with and how much experience you have with a program. With Premiere, everything will transfer over perfectly to AE. If you go with Vegas, you need to use straight cuts only to get the stuff into AE. Also, look into how to do offline/proxy editing with the different NLEs. You'll probably want to go that route. Good luck man!
