Beginner: Which Audio Device?

I'm at the point where I've realized how crappy camera line-in audio is and am beginning my search for a decent external mic.

I'm looking for an all round mic, not great at anything in particular but will get a decent job done in most situations. I guess the first question is should I be looking for a mic or a lav? Then, which one?

My top priority is value and my price range is 1500 or less.

That's a tough call when you say "decent job in most situations." Most shooters will have an arsenal of microphones at their disposal. A good lav (wireless or wired) for interviews, something like an RE50 for podium use and than a good shotgun for atmospheric audio or for use on a boom. Figure out what you want to do and than base your decision on that.

If you're just a one person crew, and doing interviews, you should consider getting either a wired or wireless lavalier mic system. If you go wireless, make sure you're getting a UHF-based system, and something that's not in the 700-800Mhz range (as there is some uncertainty about that spectrum in the new year).

An Audio Technica wireless system (ATW-1800 series) is about $500-$600 as is the Sennheiser G2 Evolution series. There's lots of great information in the stickies within the "Audio" forum. Definitely take a look there.

If you've got a larger crew, you might consider getting yourself a shotgun and a boom-pole. Ultimately, if you need good audio gear, you'll end up spending more than your camera is worth.
