Beginner Questions on Suggested Cameras for our situation

Hello everyone,

I understand that people on advanced forums such as this can get very annoyed by newbies. But I would like to take any advice that I can. Myself and two business partners plan to open up a production company. We are still very early into the planning and research stages. One of the main avenues that I personally will be focusing on is doing music videos. I'm starting to research cameras and try to understand the different specs of high definition video recording cameras. I understand that technology these days can allow a director to shoot good quality music videos that dont have to be recorded on those multi-thousand dollar TV broadcast-like cameras. If possible, I don't want to spend more than $1500 on the camera, excluding other accessories which I can pick up piece by piece along the way. So this thread is to ask for advice from those that are experienced in this kind of thing or know of good equipment for my situation. Recommended accessories and any kind of tips that could help me in my endeavors would be greatly appreciated. As far as video editing is concerned, I have a couple years of experience and plan to move up to Sony Vegas Pro. Now, I just need a better quality camera.

Thanks for the advice in advance guys!!!

I might be a little late.

I think any DSLR camera will do. At that price range: Canon T2i, Canon T3i, Canon 60D, and Panasonic GH2 would all be good options. They all have their pros and cons but they will all get the job done at probably less than $1,500.

If you plan to do music videos, how will you capture audio? Hopefully you weren't planning on using the camera mic(s), since that won't produce anything of decent quality. Back to your budget, $1500 will barely scratch the surface of a video cam which will give you manual controls and great IQ. In the Panasonic line, that would be the HMC40, but even that is a bit over your budget without the $300 audio adapter. You may not need the adapter if you are intending to record off cam. The HMC40 can produce some stunning images, but needs good light to do so. Hope you got those.

No problem being a newb here, and welcome to DVXuser. But if you are combining the words "production company" with "$1500 camera budget" you are going to have some challenges. I guess it depends on what level you intend to play.

ggrantly: music videos don't usually capture audio. They just lay the wav or mp3 file of the song onto the time line.

If you are already familiar with your equipment like the DSLR's, you might want to consider renting instead, to save money.
