Been on a horse with no name?

I'm planning to take a trip through Egypt with my DVX and was worried about protecting it from sand. I currently own a Porta Brace Hikers Pack but have no protection for the camera itself once out of the case (i.e. while shooting!).

I've looked at Porta-Brace's rain slicker, but am not convinced that it will protect agains sand... cursed sand. And then there are some underwater housing units that just look too bulky.

If I have to drop mucho dinero on some protection for the camera, I'd prefer to get something more versatile than just sand protector... not too many sandstorms in Boston. Any silver bullets? Versatile, not heavy, reliable, sandproof, sexy?

All work will be handheld. No concern regarding sticks or mounting... except maybe a camel.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks! Rock on, rockin' DVXusers!

Re: Been on a horse with no name?

I spent a month in Egypt a few years ago. One of the best trips of my life.
What brings you there?

Re: Been on a horse with no name?

How much did that set ya back pookie?

Re: Been on a horse with no name?

Sounds a little high, if I remember correctly, I paid $370 about a year ago, but worth every penny.

Protected from water, snow, salt spray, dust, sand, can be submerged, floats (good in a boat)....you can go out and shoot in ANY weather.

Re: Been on a horse with no name?

Rockin'.

The EW-Marine V2000 looks like it fits the bill. To clarify, will I also have to purchase a C-A72? I think the threading on the V2000 is 58mm - hence the advertised use with VX2000/PD-hisssssssss-150, and our beloved is 72mm. If someone (Pookie!) could describe to me what their exact set up is, that would be fly... so fly. Also, besides a slightly larger size, any difference between V2000 and V1000. How's that V1000 working for you, Pookie?

Audio... nixed? I don't imagine audio carries very well through airtight double PVC.

So Prarie, I'm heading there for rest and relaxation. Only going for three weeks, but anticipate having a blast. Feel free to forward along must-sees.

Thanks again everyone.

Re: Been on a horse with no name?

There is so much to see in three weeks. Cairo is pretty amazing. The Cairo Museume is a very full day, but well worth it. As well as the Citidel. One of my fondest memories was seeing a Sufi dance in a Mosque in the Bazar district. Just amazing. Wonder the streets. sit and have tea ad smoke shisha witht the boys. Take in the smells and the people.
I spent some time in the Sahara. Highly recomend you find a guide and camp out in the desert. There is nothing like eating under the stars and enjoying tea with fresh mint lounging in a sand dune staring at stars you never get to see in this hemisphere. The desert is beautiful. And if you can there is a place near a village called Baharia (spelling is surely incorrect) called the white desert. the sand is snow white and there are these giant dunes that get carved into mamoth mushroom shapes by the wind. It is like visiting another planet.
The trip down the nile by train, plane or boat(I vote for boat) to Aswan and the Valley of the Kings is another must. There are so many "tourist" things to do, but they are musts for the most part. Another touristy thing is the Great Pyramids. Go all out, rent the Camel, go for the ride. You will over pay, you will be a sucker, but hey when are you going to be back there. In fact not only did I do this, but I rode my first ever horse at sunset at the base of the great Pyramids. With them on one side, and a scarlet red sky on the other. The hairs on my arms are standing up right now just thining about it. You can do with out the lazor light show at night though.
Another must is a village on the Red Sea called Dahab. Soem of the best Coral in the world is a five minute drive at a place called the Blue hole. Even if you do not dive (you can learn in a few days) a mask and a snorcal, and some fins is your ticket to some of the most amazing life, colour and beauty you will ever see with your own eyes.
About a hour and a half drive from dahab is Mount Siani. You can climb it at night (due to the heat of the day) and watch the sun rise over the mountains a stones toss from where the burning bush is. And there is a quite remarkable monastary at the base.
Here are a few things to do. If you have any questions just Pm me and I will help you all I can.

Re: Been on a horse with no name?

UPDATE:

OK, so I hear all the praises about this EWA-Marine get up and order me one of these bad boys. Two days, and $450 later, it shows up.

OK, this thing first of all does fit a DVX100, but but clearly was NOT designed for it. It was designed for the VX1000 (as in Sony's 1995 workhorse), back when the camera had three buttons to operate, something like, rec/stop, exposure wheel, auto focus button. That's it. Point is, not much operability in this bad boy. Instructions read: Try to set all setttings on camera prior to inserting into casing. Right.

Throwing focus in this bad boy is impossible. You could push the auto-focus button, but on 24p, we all know that's useless. The sun sets by the time the image comes into focus.

The casing is like a purse. But that aside, the camera swims around the inside. The fit is not very snug, but again the casing was not designed for this camera. I'm sure underwater this would not be as much an issue, but when you're riding through the desert on a horse with no name, the little handle on the side really doesn't cut it as support. Plus there's that whole hand-bag/shoes matching issue.

I read an analogy somewhere else on this board about protection for your camera (a lens filter, maybe). You could go without protection on your camera like you could have sex without a condom. You could go without it and you may be fine, but if you're not... you're f****d. Well this case is kind of like a condom... except it's like a magnum... which doesn't really fit right... in fact it wasn't really designed for my equipment... kind of hard to work with actually... all loosey goosey.

OK, too much sharing.

The short of it: EWA-Marine kind of bites for terra usage. Any other options for protecting against desert sand?

Thanks.
