Beefing up sound in post

Hey guys. I've recently finished the final cut of my first short. I now want to improve the sound. I've removed noise, but I want the sound to have the qualities of the mixes we hear theatrically and on DVD. Does anyone know a good way to do this. I am using Adobe Premiere. Am I just supposed to tweak the reverb settings? I tried that but didn't like the results as they seemed to distort the audio. How would you guys suggest making the sound punchier?

Without listening to what you have, it's pretty hard to just say push this button to make it sound good (otherwise sound engineers would make minimum wage).

The book is well worth the money if you are trying to do this yourself.
