One question I need to find an answer to with Bebob's ZOE-DVXL...

Does this unit solve the problem of the HVX's tendency to have abrupt starts and stops when using the motorized zoom? I would love to get this zoom flaw squashed.

Thanks.

:)

"solve the problem?" Yes it does..... sometimes..... ZOE good...... lens bad...... the HVX is a very handy camera but unusable for 'live' or 'on air' zoom work......

Works as well as the Libec ZC-3DV Mountable Zoom Control For Lanc & Panasonic DV Cameras, which only cost 109.95 usd at B&H (I've been using mine for a year without complaint).

BTW, Have you ever tried using the rocker at the top of the handle; when set to the slowest setting?

Interesting comment. There are probably more than one or two folks that would disagree with you (about the lens, and live work).
Surely there are better choices (few of which are available at around $4900 usd) but, In general, "it ain't the bow & arrows . . . it's the indians which make the difference." <g>.

Best.

Thanks for the 'arrows & indians' line. I have done a bit of shooting..... 37 years in fact.... full time in the business..... 35mm, 16mm, tape, P2...... TVC, docos, corporates..... and that was just this week..... I might just be allowed to make a comment hey.....

.....and yes, as part of my fairly extensive kit I have had a HVX for 14 months....

i dont want to get in between the arrow flingiin' here

- but in my experience the dvxl is indeed a lifesaver for the HVX's rather dismal zoom control

I use the ZOE and yes, it's a vast improvement over the camera's zoom control, but you still get a slight jerk when the zoom engages.

Two things that help with the HVX/DVX zoom bump:

--Before you need to zoom, ease the rocker a bit in the direction you plan to zoom. There seems to be a bit of slack or lash in the gears, and taking up this slack sometimes helps.

--Hide your zoom start with a fairly big pan or tilt or dolly or action in the frame. This is a good idea even with better zooms. I'm not a fan of zoom solos.

Yes the little Panas have sloppy zooms, some better than others. I do just fine with the $20,000 Fujinon on my Betacam, but I have a devil of a time with these little guys. Last week on an architectural video, I had to re-do about 10% of my shots even with the above advice. But for the money, it's a small drawback.
