Beams Of Light

does anyone know how to create the best beams of light for shooting on the DVX.

Do they usually use a smoke machine and strong lights with the barn doors tight?

Is it shooting on film that gives them such a sharp edge.. here's an example of the look I'm after

Any ideas would be appreciated.. thanks

Smoke is the only way to get that in camera. Check DJ supplies or party rental stores. Or check with a DJ, many own there own machine. I think that spencers may sell them. If your going to be doing it alot it may be worth buying one.

Smoke or dust, a strong backlight, and sharp cuts in the light help the effect. That picture is probably a 12 or 18k light hung above and behind the set, focused on the slotted roof creating sharp beams of light. The smoke is probably an oil cracker system, but you can use a party fogger and just waft it a lot to get an even spread. Remember, backlighting the smoke is the key to this type of effect.
