i am shooting a music video this weekend at the beach and was wondering what the best time of day would be to do it at. also, do you have any suggestions as to what to do with the natural lighting? The video is supposed to be very upbeat and "bright sunny day"

thanks in advanced,
ian

Early morning or late afternoon is probably going to be better. Are you shooting out into the water? Carry a polarizer filter to cut glare of various things and if it's sunny some foamcore for bounce should do the trick to fill in your talent. I like carrying blacks and silks as well if you need some negative fill and diffusion respectively.

Oh and be super aware of protection from the sand with your camera gear!

ND filters, alot of lens cleaner and lens tissues, that saltwater sucks. We shot in the middle of the day, and it was fine. foamcore is a pretty good idea too.

heres the video I worked on. the morning scenes were shot in the morning, overcast, everything else was in clear sky, bright so cal day.

Nomadic has it down. The beach is VERY bright due to it's extremely high reflectance. Watch out for blowing sand. I can still feel sand grits in my HVX focusing ring.... :(

May want to put a raincoat over your camera to help protect it against blowing sand...As for the foamcore where would one pick that up? What type of store?

I get my foamcore from Hobby Lobby, they have them in all kinds of sizes and colors like gold, silver, white and even black for your negative fills. I hope that helps.

Thank you. I will definitely bring some foamcore and some ND filters. If i have time i will try to get a polarizer before the shoot. Nomadic, thank you for posting your video. It's pretty much what i am going for in terms of look. Did you use all natural lighting? What camera did you use?

The beach was mostly all natural, a little bounce here and there...

It was an HVX with PS 35mm adapter and I think Ziess primes... they might have been cooke. I don't remember, but yeah, it looks killer.

ps. i don't wanna take all the credit, and have the other guys that did it too beat me up. I was just an AC on it. :)

Hi Nomadic:

Which camera was this shot on? It looks really nice.

Also, which beach(s)? Santa Monica or somewhere else or multiple beaches?

Great work.

Dan

...it was down at balboa in newport.

Might also want to consider protection from the sun for the camera. If it's hot like it has been lately I would recommend keeping the camera under an umbrella if at all possible in between takes. The camera casing will heat up in the direct sunlight. Don't forget the obvious for actors and crew regarding sunscreen, hats and water if you plan to be on the beach all day long. I shot a music video over the labor day weekend (HOT!!!) and had to take extra precautions because of the extreme heat.
Good luck. Perry
