Tilta USA just respond that IF you're buying the product from BH, they will not validate the warranty. You will have to send to BH for service. WTF they're thinking? Why even let BH distribute the product?

This sounds a lot like grey-market selling, where you are buying a product that only has a warranty from the reseller and will not be honored by the manufacturer. If you can live with this then you can often get your product at a cheaper price, if you can't live with this then you have to buy the product from full warranty sellers and you usually pay a higher price for this.

how is B&H not an autorized reseller? Is there another Tilta manufacturer in China? The margins on this thing must be razor thin so they don't want to cover warranty repairs. I have the feeling they might have undersold this one. It is an unheard of price point after all...

how is B&H not an authorized reseller?

Here's a brand new Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF lens that B&H sells for $299 and it comes with a limited 1 year warranty. This lens is grey-market and it's listed in the B&H description as "imported".

Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens : $299

Here's the same Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF lens that B&H sells for $334 and it comes a limited 1 year warranty and a 4 year warranty extension from Nikon USA when you register your lens. This is a lens supplied by Nikon USA to B&H Photo.

Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens : $334

...Now I don't see anything listed on the grey-market Nikon lens page, but I am pretty sure that the 1 year limited warranty for the "imported" lens comes from B&H Photo, and if you tried to get it fixed by Nikon USA they would either refuse to fix it or charge you the full price for the repair. As far as Nikon USA is concerned a grey-market lens has NO warranty.

So I am pretty sure it's exactly the same deal with Tilta USA. Buy the gear that was supplied by Tilta USA and you've got the full USA warranty, but buy the slightly cheaper Tilta gear that did NOT come from Tilta USA and your only option is the seller for repairs.

I can't believe that tilta can't control their regional markets. As the matter of fact I can't believe Nikon can't either and they are not suing B&H unless they quietly approve of this so they sell more lenses cheaper but with no warranty...
We are truly a "wild west" haha

Correction: No Nikon warranty.

I first noticed the difference in Nikon lenses from B&H in the early 1990's, and many other stores have been doing the same thing for just as long. If B&H did not offer grey-market gear, then some buyers would turn to the Internet to buy directly from stores in Asia just to save a few bucks.

If they buy abroad so be it. Slap a duty on it if you want. Buying in the US is completely different game. I have the feeling that Japan Inc is ok with it...

So now Tilta responded back saying you send back to BH, BH will ship back to tilta in LA, service it then ship back to NY then BH will ship back to customer. Still a wtf business model is this?

@TheDingo, dude, this is not lens. Even if it is lens, BH will clearly post it is imported (if you remember back to the old day on their catalog, they have 2 columns. 1 for USA price, 1 for imported item)

The price for this item is THE SAME as you buying from anywhere. it is not cheaper. Tilta USA supply to BH.
