Battle Star Galactica

Hey guys,

Anyone seen this (mini)series on the SciFi channel (yes I know it is a remake)? I'm rather impressed by the directing.

Anyway, my real reason for posting is to ask if anyone knows whether this is shot with the DVX. The footage looks very much like the DVX (possibly the SDX) - it's most certainly a panasonic camera. I caught only a brief glimpse of the camera in use and I quite clearly saw a flip out LCD panel and camera with a shape similar the the DVX. Does the SDX have a similar LCD panel? I'm also guessing they use the mini35.

A few thoughts on the cinematography though:

From what I have seen so far the footage looks like it really could use a little sharpening and a raising of the black level. The broadcast footage has a slightly washed out look to it. Anyone else notice this?

Re: Battle Star Galactica

That was my initial reaction as well but I can't get the brief image of that camera out of my head. I looked up the official site but couldn't find anything.

Re: Battle Star Galactica

Other than reality style, "how to" type programs, nothing on broadcast television uses DV25 formats for acquisition.

Re: Battle Star Galactica

Thanks Walter. I'm beginning to hear that it was shot on HD which is what I would have expected. I could have sworn I saw the DVX though!

as a prop or someone's behind the scenes camera but there would be no way a DV camera would be used on such a show.

Re: Battle Star Galactica

Yes that does make sense. What I thought I saw though was the DVX with the mini35 and a follow focus system. It was, however, a very, very, brief shot in a commercial so I'm almost certainly wrong!

It would be near impossible to do special effects in a DV25 format.

That’s what I was thinking. There’s a WHOLE LOT of compositing going on there . . .

Re: Battle Star Galactica

..actually, i heard that they just put all the FX in there by hanging moving transparency sheets with stuff printed on them in front of the lense.. a whole team of puppeteers sliding lasers in and out , and all.

But they're not exactly ready for prime time.[/quote]

Big difference in a 2 inch screen on your computer and a 42 inch TV screen.

Re: Battle Star Galactica

Wow, those guys really went after the detail of the original series. They must have worn out their VHS tapes rewinding to make sure they got it right.

And actually, it's not very different in many other ways either. ;D

Re: Battle Star Galactica

They shot on S-VHS and did all of the effects in-camera. I gotta give ‘em props for chutzpah.

Re: Battle Star Galactica

Truly. I realize (as Walter pointed out) that it's easy to miss crap on a small screen, but to me it looks remarkably like the original series. They did a great job.

Re: Battle Star Galactica

I’ve actually seen it on my 55” screen. It wouldn’t be acceptable today -- obviously. But it would have been in the ‘70s.

Re: Battle Star Galactica

Well, a saw a little blurb of the BTS stuff you saw, and there was a flip-out screen which looked a lot like the DVX's . . .

However, I think the INTERVIEWS were being shot with it. This is perfectly possible.
