Hey everyone,
I just wanted to give everyone a heads up on a battery powered firewire drive I made out of off the shelf parts. I couldn’t find a battery firewire portable HD made by any company so, i tried to do it myself and it works! Hope this helps someone. It’s a nice cheap portable solution when you want to offload footage from the camera to a HD out in the field...
Here are the parts I used:
Macally 2.5 iee 1394 HD case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817146604
APC Mobile Powerpack
http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=UPB10
Seagate Laptop drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148128

It’s been reliable and works great. I’ve offloaded quite a few p2 cards and never had a problem.
Hope this helps someone...

Fantastic news! I have been looking for this kind of solution...the only problem is where I could buy those things here...anyway, thanks. :dankk2: If anyone knows where I could buy those things here in Europe or maybe order from the U.S....let me know.

HD Case from amazon 37.00
APC battery from Circuit City 59.00
80 gig HD newegg 59.00

so approx. $155.00 US

You might be able to make it cheaper if you use a 60 gig HD

RE1000. GO SOX!

Betacam, I have one question for you about the APC Mobile Powerpack...How do you charge it? Does it have some adapter or what kind of lithium-batteries it has? I need to know this because, I'm not sure if I am able to use it here in europe...

Thanks.

petelms, It came with a plug in adapter with a usb cable attached, very much like an ipod adapter- like MarcMalkowski mentioned.

I've never charged it from my computer, but, I'd have to believe that it would work. I'll give it a try later tonight to see if it works and post results here.

peteIms, where re you ordering?

I already have the hard drive (got a very good deal at my company for a 120GB iomega), but the battery would be a nice add-on

Yeah, thanks for the info, Betacam2. Would love to hear if it works. Excellent topic.

MarcMalkowski, the only place I could find is the Amazon. Do a search for words: apc mobile and you will find it. Also if you need the HD case, you will find it also from Amazon: macally 2.5" USB

Hope this helps.

Heheh, ole hyvä. Damn, bad news...you cannot order those things to Europe from Amazon...:crybaby: Ou nou... It was too good to be true...

Well... how fast do you need that?
I am working on developing a little box that might solve many power supplying problems. But I will be abled to put everything together in about 4-5 weeks from now on.

alright, I will post pictures and everything on here as soon as it is finished, I would have done that already but I first off need to finish my work here in Ireland and get back to Germany to actually construct the box!

The battery charges off of a Mac Pro.

It does not charge off my powerbook, but, my powerbook has never seemed to power devices via usb.

I hope that helps
