Battery Powered China ball

Although Chris answered your question as to what is cheapest..
The light itself would be less than spectacular.
There are other ways to accomplish this, but the cheapest way to have a nice, fairly bright china ball, that is evenly lite, and useful, would be to tap into either a car's battery(yes, you would have to be tethered to a car, or it's battery) A belt worn, DC current battery, or a rigged up, inverter that could power a DC light, a Digi- Mole or 200 watt K5600 Joker, which can use Anton Bauer batteries.
The last two options can be rented from a Film / Video equipment rental house.
Unless you out in the middle of nowhere, a long stinger and a helpful grip can be your ext. cord's wrangler.
If your out in the woods, rough terrain etc, then a battery would be the best option.
The suggestion of the flying saucer lights inside the china ball would not provide even light distribution inside this fixture. Even then, without the use of 5-8 of these lights, somehow mounted on the interior to shine outwards, or to pointed in, to hit a reflector , is not worth the trouble.
Put a 3200 K light bulb from www.FILMTOOLS.COM inside your lantern, and use long stingers-(ext. cords) to power it. Done. Cheap, cheap....
