Baton Rouge

We're doing our stage work in Louisiana and our location work on Oahu, and with the big Navy Pacific fleet exercise coming up in August.

It's purely a financial decision. Since Louisiana offers all kinds of incentives to bring a production to their state, and since California offer all sorts of incentives to remove one's production from their state, we're just going where we can get things done for the cheapest.

Unless there are major policy changes in the future, California is effectively finished as a meaningful center of major-budget feature production. Hell, the fellow over at Marvel Studios whose job is basically to work on keeping production here, just announced that Captain America will be done in England (oh, the irony).

Gotta hand it to California's leadership: their program to wreck the state is proceeding faster and with much greater efficiency than I would have ever expected.

I'm doing a lot of editing work for a company based in Baton Rouge. They film there for the exact same reasons. I've only been to New Orleans once...bring bug spray.

Oh, and don't get any fruity, organic bug spray either. If it doesn't have DEET in it it's useless.

I wonder if one can buy pure DEET over-the-counter. Assuming that buttering yourself with pure DEET doesn't make your skin explode, or something...

off! deep woods for sportsmen, 1 oz. pump spray is 98.25% DEET.

although some of the reviews says it eats through the bottle it comes in and leaks. not sure how that would be safe for anyone's skin.

All this talk of DEET reminds of this office quote.

[looking at the sun]
Dwight Schrute:I'm gonna say thirty.
Ralph:Ah, forty. Insect repellent, which we clearly need, reduces the effectiveness of SPF.
Dwight Schrute:Good point but, thought of that already. [takes out container from trunk] Combination SPF, repellent.
Ralph:Whoa. Homemade?
Dwight Schrute:Of course. You think the EPA would ever allow that much DEET?[both laugh]

Oh man that cracks me up.

I used Off! Deep Woods in the Philippines...it worked great!

Hmm...rampaging oil slicks, and now hurricane season approaching. I wonder what crude oil + gale-force winds looks like.

Probably like chocolate mousse, but not as tasty.

So far Baton Rouge is pretty cool. Based upon friendly people and availability of conveniences and general green-ness and thunderstorms at noon that darken the sky like unto the black of night, riven bright by lightning.

Of course it's early in the summer and I'm mostly out mornings and evenings, being air-conditioned and under glass for the balance of the day.
