batman dead end

I've been following Sandy Collara's work for a long time...I love his films. He always pulls out all the stops. I think its really cool that he spends a ton of money on shorts that are in no way commercial (using copyrighted materials). I think it shows that he is just a great fan and artist. Obviously not in it for the money. :)

I do believe this was shot on film though...may have to be moved to the proper forum.

If you haven't seen this one make sure to check it out...definately worth the download.

It was shot on 35 and he spent around 35 thou to make it (or more). But I'm told he got a lot of work out of it. On what, I have no idea.

Yeah I have talked to Sandy on several occassions. To say he "did'nt do it for the money." is right and wrong. Yes he could not sell it, but he did do it in the hopes it would get studio attention and work in features. Last time I checked with him he was meeting with several studios and talking with universal about a "creature from the black lagoon" re-make. I do really admire what he pulled off though.

Too bad this guy spent 35 grand on something with no originality. I think he would have got more attention from the studios if had come up with something of his own. Production value is certainly there, but man oh man, what a waste.

I'm not sure what you mean ORIGINAL, I personally don't remember seeing batman part 1-5 with a predator or alien in it... an as far as WHAT A WASTE the whole purpose was self promotion, and what better way to have a product for promotion than to have one with an already established following..... but bgundu I guess when he's signed to universal he can repent for his stupidity....

i'm aware, and batman was a comic for a long time still is in many many many forms and a tv series and cartoons and 5 movies, what the F*#K is Nolan thinking I guess, there's no way to have something original! the scarcrow isn't an anything new... I guess I'll put that film off and see herby: reloaded.. Nolan he should have done gofferman....

Bgundu, i don´t think he would recieve more attention if he did something original... I mean, did anybody here got his short film commented everywhere around the world and downloaded as his Batman?

I´m a Batman fan and i got it on it´s moment. More, all my friends have it. And it wasn´t so joke in look as the rest of Batmans. You know, if he comes with the black lagoon thing (fans film), what do you think will happend when they say From the creator of "Batman dead end"?

I think he´s very happy with what he did, the money he put (and for sure wasn´t wasted if he gets the contract)and the buzz this short film had (has) around the world, outside the festivals.

He did well.

It was a gamble that paid off for him. As Mr. Guiyotinne pointed out, if he had done an original character based piece, he wouldn't have gotten the fan base for batman spreading buzz around the internet about his work. That's the only reason hollywood took notice of him. Now in their eyes, he has a reputation they can market and make money from.

About the piece itself, I was very underwhelmed by it. I mean production value was high, the costumes looked great, nice lighting etc. But the editing, compositions, directing and storytelling choices I thought were mediocre at best. This got buzz because of all the characters being seen together which "looked cool" to the fandom because they were dying to see this kind of thing be done by hollywood (especially after Joel Schumacher's laughable approach, this was a breath of fresh air). I'd hold off calling this guy a great film maker until I see what he can do with a narrative.

I personally have high hopes for the Nolan Batman. I think he's going to be the first director to get it right and truly give a realistic portrayal of the character from scratch. By the way, I actually drew Batman for DC comics once.

PS: I thought there were only 4 batman movies? Two by Tim Burton and two by Schumacher, no?

Well, i don´t remember it perfectly, but i do remember how i went "cool!", and after a couple of times i saw deffects as everything, specially one handheld shot showing predator and batman in an arms competition that looked awful by lightning and compositing (amateur, not awful... well...), but the rest; specially when the aliens show from darkness got my attention completely.

Nolan and his (sorry but it´s Millers) year one, that´s another thing. Neeson making another Qui-gon didn´t took me; I hope i´m mistaken.

And I hope he doesn´t get the suit very soon. Should be for third act. Why? i love Miller´s work and find similarities from year one and The man without fear, and both characters do well without suit. And audiences must lounge for getting it. The later, the better. I´m scare of what can happend.

Storyteller32 you´r right; just four. And Burton´s are ok if you compare with Shumacher. Man, i´m really scare, i will pray Crom Nolan don´t mess it! ;D

As per hollywood standards I think he'll be in the suit by the end of act 1. The movie is called Batman, not Bruce Wayne or Gotham (as compared with Smallville) so I have a hard time imagining them keeping him out of the suit until the third act.

I agree with you that year one was an amazing piece of work. But you also have to remember that was a mini-series in comic book format and not a 2-3 hour film. If you're expecting batman year one the movie, then be prepared to be disappointed. They're just taking elements from year one and incorporating it into this new "batman begins" tale. Hollywood would never allow a basically straight crime drama in a Batman film. They need characters they can market as video games and toys (can you say scarecrow?) But agreed, I think year one alone would have made the better story to tell as the first film. It would have been very smart, but less marketable in hollywood's eyes.

Liam Neeson is an interesting choice as Ras Al Ghul and I think he can pull it off. But if all you see is Qui-Gon then there's no getting around that and I think you'll be disappointed from that point of view alone.

My concern is the story might have too many characters to develop properly (something schumacher's films suffered from). We'll see glimpses of all these characters and not know enough about them to give a damn. But Nolan is a solid storyteller (ie. Memento) so this is why I'm hopeful for the film.

PS: I still think batman dead end is overrated. And I hated all of Burton's work on Batman. It was other worldly, not realistic and I didn't believe the world he created. He's good at production design in creating these worlds but I'm not a fan of him as director. This is the first batman which will be set in the real world comparitively.

I didn´t said i liked Burton´s, but they are much better than Shumi... And probably you are right about Dead End; I just went nuts over seen so many "famous" characters on the monitor... 0.o

About Neeson he´s a awesome actor (loved him in Krull as a little boy!... And lately in Gun Shy) and i know he can do what he wants and get a great character from Ras, but, i felt strange as him for another Mentor character in another fan based franchise. Qui gonn was the best character in EP 1 (he didn´t saved the film, but put his name between beloved characters from childhood. He IS the Mentor, next to Guinnes, James Earl Jones, Anthony Quinn or Sydow in a so long great list!). I don´t know if right now there is a better actor to take this role (probably there is, and that´s my point), but i would give an oportunity for another one, being so well drawn Neeson as Qui.

I wont feel deception if the film doesn´t go as i wish; it´s the normal way this world works (give a little to everybody), and yes, Nolan is a good choice. But i would let Paul Dini get an option too because he handled very well a cartoon serial with a lot of character development and a darky noir style you choose Batman or their future version.

I think i just wished to have a... What´s the rating for mature audiences there? well, this one. Tsk!

Have you seen "Ed Wood"? That's a fantastic movie, in my opinion. Mind you, that's the only film of his I've seen (and I'm not really interested in Nightmare Before Christmas).

skratchiechan, yeah, Joker looks awesome!

I like the Batman Adventures (2003) series because I like the cartoony style. I just thought I'd add that while I was talking about Batman, Joker looks cool in those books too.

Ed Wood was indeed a great film. I completely forgot he did that. He did Beetlejuice too which I thought was great also.

But don't forget he also did Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes, Mars Attacks Two silly Batman movies (michael keeton?? C'mon!)...

Ergo: I'm still not a fan of his.

I remember hearing alot about this movie but never seen it. I do however had friends that worked on it. Everytime I would ask if I can see this, no one would let me see it. I still to this day don't understand why they won't let me see it. Now when I found his website, none of the freakin links would work! WTF! What are they scared of?! For two years now, they still won't show it to me. WTF! What's going on? The numerous links I found on the net all don't work. So I say, the phuck with it!

Spider, go here to watch it:

http://theforce.net/fanfilms/shortfilms/batman_deadend/index.asp

If that doesn't work, go to theforce.net and do a search for batman dead end. They're the one's who are hosting the footage.

Just watched the behind the scenes of this thing from that link. No wonder the costumes looked great. The director worked for Stan Winston's company and a good portion of the suit and makeup was done by the people he worked with. I was wondering where he got the money to put into this thing. It's an interesting behind the scenes. I recommend watching it. Man, I wish I had 30 grand to do something.

Spider, who do you know that worked on this? If it's special effect makeup people, I have a need for a shoot coming up.

Wait, I did see Mars Attacks, because I like 50s Sci-Fi, and I thought that was absolutely dreadful. I'm not a fan of him either, but I love Ed Wood (the movie, not the man :)).
