Heath Ledger set as Joker in "Batman" sequel

Tue Aug 01, 3:30 AM ET

Batman is heading into a sequel, titled "The Dark Knight," and he will face off against the Joker, this time played by Heath Ledger.

Christian Bale, the star of last year's "Batman Begins," will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Christopher Nolan is returning to the directing chair.

Ledger, Oscar-nominated this year for his role in "Brokeback Mountain," resurrects a murderous role memorably played in 1989 by Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's "Batman."

"Batman Begins" was a critical and commercial hit, and relaunched the Warner Bros. franchise.

An early 2007 start date is being eyed for the sequel. Before then, Bale and Nolan will be in theaters this fall with the Disney release "The Prestige."

don't know how i feel about the title since it's not the Dark Knight series they're adapting... heath ledger?? i don't know about that... i'm a little scared

EDIT: here's a photoshopped pic of Ledger as Joker...

Damn, I guess the world will never see the man who was born to play this role.

I've said it before, but he would have been perfect.

I don't know. I think Ledger could pull it off. But whether or not he will is another matter entirely.

I guess we'll have to wait and see...

EDIT:

Then again, they said the same thing about Jack too.

How they could ever have doubted him as the joker, I will never know.

I agree, but I think Glover is a little too loopy for big studios to entrust a multi, multi-million dollar project.

Word.

Nothing but faith in the direction of Nolan.

Calling it now: The Dark Knight will be the greatest comic book movie to date, whenever that date may be.

(Especially if he can convince Phillip Seymour Hoffman to play Penguin.)

i'll have to wait till the movie comes out to see, but i don't picture Ledger as The Joker, it just doesnt sit right with me... hopefully i'm wrong

I trust Christopher Nolan. He's an amazing filmmaker, and I haven't disliked anything he's put out thus far. Let's give him a chance since we're all clueless to his vision for the film! It IS gonna be great!

I agree about having faith in Nolan, but I still think that Sean Penn would make the perfect Joker.

Of course on second thought the only part I didn't like about Batman Begins was the casting of Murphy for Scarecrow. Hm ... here's hoping for a great film.

I didn't like Bale as Batman, and then I loved the movie.

So.. yeah, and I think Ledger could do the joker. If he can't, just have mark hamill dub the voice.

i dont really care about the casting for this. they have a great cast already.

my worry is about the script, the previous one was pretty bad and ruined the film for me.

I like Ledger, just don't know about him playing the joker. His previous characters have been very much the same, so I've never really seen much of a range from him.

I agree with a previous post that the guy who played the scarecrow in Batman Begins was the awful casting as was the woman of his interest (Cruise's partner, correct?).
