batch capturing

I've been reading some of the posts that deal with batch-capturing in FCP HD, but I've not found the answer that will work. I've got tapes that were all shot in 24pa, but when I import my batch-capture list, and begin capturing, the clips are brought in, but have a stutter to them. I have tried adjusting my settings in the "audio/video" pull-down menu to remove the 2:3:3:2 pull-down; and have tried capturing in 29.97, and in 23.98, and still no luck. I also tried to contact Apple to get there advice, which was apparently worth $199 per call, or $699 per year! What exactly are the settings to use when the footage is in 24pa, but using a canon zr60 to capture from to avoid wear on the panasonic? Help is greatly appreciated

Re: batch capturing

A/V prefs
Sequence: DV NTSC 48khz - 23.98
Capture: DV NTSC 48khz Advanced (2:3:3:2) pulldown
Device Control: Firewire NTSC NDF

System Prefs -> Playback
Pulldown 2:3:2:3

If you have DVX100 (not A) select clips and then do Tools > Offset Audio Sync (Assuming you have DVX100 and installed the extras for this camera)

Re: batch capturing

Curious,

As my trials gave unwanted results with the method of 'capturing at 29.97' and sequence set to 23.38', is this something to do with adding back the frames removed with the pulldown? Otherwise, playing back the 29.97 on a 23.38 sequences forces me to render and looks jumpy...even with the offset for audio (which drives me nuts I must add, so hard to trim audio this way)

So if I'm forced to reverse the pulldown after the editing, why do it in the first place?

Re: batch capturing

Just try using the presets above if you're shooting 24pa (scene file 6) . You're telling FCP to capture with special 2:3:3:2 removal and put it into a 23.98 sequence where it belongs.

If you did capture 24pa as 29.97 (and this makes it slower and more round about) then you need to select the clips and apply Tool > Remove Advanced pulldown.

Once you offset the audio (if you need to) of a clip then it's done. You can trim as you like.

You only need to do this if you want pure 24fps for film or DVD.

If you've going to just keep it at normal video speed (29.97) then shoot at 24p (scene file 5) and just capture and edit normally.

nice, I'll give it a go. Thanks

Re: batch capturing

I need to do some tests on my system because I just completed a 2 minute project that was shot in 24PA with a DVX100 not the "A" and I did not notice any audio that was out of sync. I shot some X-Games type stuff and when you see the bike riders doing a trick in the air you hear the announcer talking about the trick. If it was out of sync you would hear the announcer's voice either before the bike got to the ramp or after the rider landed. All of my audio was right on. Maybe I need to import a 24PA clip of me interviewing someone to see if the mouth is off from the audio. So far its not and I have not select that Tools>Offset Audio Sync....
