basso blocks, anybody diy

I've built a few apple boxes while not particularly elegant they work, now I'm thinking about knocking out a few basso blocks, any thoughts? This is just for my own use .

Looks easy enough to build, but I'd worry about the unsupported middle.

Like the look of these, but same problem about not being supported in the middle:

Depending upon how much abuse you plan to give them, hardwood may be the better choice for the lower blocks.
I'd use 7-ply plywood for the top.

Thanks Paul and Greg, I have a bunch of maple , ash and oak, much of it planned down already. I might have some marine grade ply sitting around but I would think any good quality plywood should work. How common are basso blocks? I assume many grip trucks stock a combination of basso and apples.
