Basic NTSC Monitor vs. ACD questions

Hi,

I'm editing my first project and have a Sony PVM NTSC monitor and a 23" ACD (with a Matrox MXO) as preview monitors in the editing suite.

I calibrated both monitors and the colors match. However, there is a difference in image quality.

When I preview with the NTSC, the footage is crisp.

When I preview with the ACD (full screen), the footage has some artifacts.

Is this just a simple matter of resolution? Which preview shows the most accurate image?

The footage was shot in 24PA and edited 23.98 in FCP.

I would appreciate any links, advice or feedback.

Thank you.

Ken

The properly calibrated Sony PVM will be more accurate than a calibrated ACD. The ACD + Matrox combo is a solid budgetary solution when in a pinch, but not a true replacement for a Broadcast monitor. You could query around here for posts by Shane Ross on the Matrox/ACD combo (or check his site). He's talked about it on a few occassions.

cheers.

Is this footage DV? Because if so, then the MXO is UPSCALING it to fit into the 1920x1080 screen size of the Apple display. The MXO/ACD combination is best for HD content. DV will tend to look very soft. And since you have the SD NTSC display, just use that.
