Basic lav questions

I'm going to use a COS-11x omni-directional miniature pre-polarized lavalier microphone for some instructional videos by connecting it directly to a camera.

I am completely new to the world of lavs. Can anyone give me any advice for getting the best sound possible out of this mic? Any tips on placement, configurations, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the link, a couple additional questions:

1.) For dialogue in a controlled setting, should I use the metal mesh windscreen that comes with the lav?

2.) Should the extra slack from the lav leading to the module that connects to the XLR be wrapped up or should it just be left to dangle? Does it effect the sound quality either way?

Thanks!!!

Probably won't need the mesh widscreen indoors unless the talent is "puffy" with their breathing. Try it both ways and see.

The excess cable can be gathered up without worry about affecting the sound - just don't twist it too vigorously lest you break one of the fine wires inside and leave some slack - you don't want subject movement to tug on the cable and cause noise. Don't forget to use the strain relief loop where the cable connects to the mic capsule.
