Basic editing hardware?

Hello, new to this forum. I was referred here by a fellow member at Nikon Cafe.

I'm new to the HD video world and quickly finding my aging computer hardware, although adequate for photo editing, is laughably underpowered for video editing.

So what do I really need to build a basic system capable of doing HD editing? Ideally out the door cost would be in the $1k range. Not looking to make the next Hollywood feature film, just to basic editing and color adjustments, probably some grading. No CGI or crazy stuff.

Is an i7 really that much better than an i5 or would the money be better invested into memory and video hardware? I'd only be running basic software like Premier Elements and Avid Studio. Not sure those programs could even take advantage of an i7.

Thanks and I look forward to learning and sharing here on the forum!

Pete
