Based on actual/true events?

I heard this story from a friend and she claims that it is a "true" story.
But, I have yet to hear anything about the story (on the news and such) while it seems almost impossible to search for on the internet.

I want to do a short subject on the story but I don't know if there is any process of needing to contact somone.

Any suggestions?

IMO...

First off, you need your friend to give you all the details. EVERYTHING.

Secondly, while it is possible this story hasn't been on the internet, there's also a good chance it has.

Thirdly, if it's based on or involves people or a person which is still alive, then you very well may need to get a 'life rights' contract.

Fourth, if your short is losely based on this 'story', then I wouldn't worry about any of the above.

It would have to be pretty loose to avoid needing rights. Different names to protect the innocent ( and poor production folk too).
