Barry's Book saved my Ass!!!

Was shooting a 5 camera shoot of a amazing Fashion Show on the weekend.
Had rented an extra DVX...setup the scene files the sames as my other cameras and thought all was good.

This being a live event you only get one take...I proceeded to get into position and the first model comes out, I hit record button and the camera won't go into record....I start flipping out.

The error was something like "DV recording Discontuned"

I run back stage and start looking for Barry's book in a seroius panic!!!!

Found the answer in the Other Function Setting under DV Control..."when the camera is set to External the DVX will not record to the internal tape."

Got back on the set and only missed 3 models...

I was so glad to have that book with me on set.
Thanx Barry your book saved my ass, and your book will be on set with me on every shoot.

Also the footage looks awesome (thanx to barry's DVD) and I will be posting stills and video this week.

I cannot explain how much stress I went through on this...I was ready to yank one of the other DVX's from my crew to just get filming as I had the best camera position.

Why in hell would they put a function like that on a camera...???

..so that you can record to an external deck , and not use the cameras heads or tape.

.. you should do a record check during setup to make sure everything is set for "go time" though. man taylor... i feel your pain man. that would cause some serious stress to have that happen. it stresses me out just thinking about it..

so would that mean that I can record unto an external mini-dv deck or any format deck?
They do that on the set of STARWARS. this guy records the stuff from a mile away from set. cool.

and how do I set it to external?

It is in the other function settings, and Barry's book details how to do it. From what I understand it allows video to pass through the DVX to and external video recorder without recording to internal tape.

Glad it helped!

Yes, EXT lets you control an external camera or deck (or DV Rack or Firestore or really any type of firewire recording device). The theory is that you can record to this external device rather than to internal tape. If you plugged in a Panasonic AG-DV2500 deck (loaded with a large 276-minute tape), theoretically you'd have full control over a four-and-a-half-hour tape.

The camera lets you choose from INT, EXT, BOTH, or CHAIN. Chain seems like a really neat idea, it records to the internal tape until the tape's almost over, then it automatically triggers an external recorder (so you can change the tape and keep going, without missing a beat!)

ah. i see. thanks. didn't know i had to set it to ext for external recording. ..
even for firestore huh?

so, the camera would then just be the imaging device, it doesn't run the TC does it?

If you're recording only to an external device, the external device would likely be generating its own TC. Very few DV devices can read the TC encoded in the DV data stream (the DVX being one that can, if you set 1394 TC Regen properly).

My only problem with CHAIN recording, is that your external device has to be in REC PAUSE mode for it to work. I use a Sony GV-D900 clamshell as the external and it only will stay in REC PAUSE for a minutes before taking itself out of that mode. I would imagine that most recorders, including using another DVX100, would suffer from this drawback. So you end up having to guess when the main DVX is going to trigger the recording on the external, and hopefully be able to set the external to REC PAUSE in time to catch that trigger.

If you are in external, does the hours meter for head wear still run, or is it hooked into the tape drive?

If there is a tape in the camera deck and the power is on, the hour meter is rolling. Remove the tape and the hour meter stops. I believe that's right.

wow, that's strange. Even if you're just fooling with the settings with the tape in the hrs are counting in? wow
