Was anyone else as utterly disappointed by season 4 of Barry as I was? It's like they forgot they were making a comedy. Which might have been okay if the drama were more interesting and better executed

Agreed. I was very disappointed by season 4 after a great season 3. I really don't think the whole flash forward device was effective. As you mentioned they were just taking themselves too seriously (with the exception of Fred Armison's hilarious cameo). I hope Hader isn't losing his sense of humor and taking himself too seriously...
