Barry Weiss Quits "Storage Wars"

Typed my response before I saw yours.
As I said, I never saw anywhere on a episode of Storage Wars where it claims where it is real and not staged. If you can direct me to this I will gladly agree with you.
It's presented as reality so they need to do the opposite and run a disclaimer that some of the items found are staged. It's like if you watch a baseball game where the outcome has been predetermined and is being played by actors...that's a big difference from watching the Sox and Yankees slug it out.

What does it matter what the cost is of the show produced. ... Paul you say it's dragging the industry down, being someone in the thick of it, I say it's keeping it afloat.
You are saying it's keeping it afloat because you are the one in the boat. All the unemployed lighting guys, writers, makeup artists, caterers, set builders, etc that would be working on a scripted show for that time slot would beg to differ.

The assumption is that we would have more scripted shows if reality shows did not exist. I simply don't feel that is true. I believe there would be less channels and less shows.

You might be right, but we won't know unless people get completely sick of the reality genre like they got completely sick of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?
The way I see it is that there are a limited number of time slots, and if they all get filled up with cheap reality and singing contests, then there is less demand for scripted content on TV. What will probably start to happen is that cable TV will just bleed audience and the channels will keep pumping out cheap programming because they're losing eyeballs and thus ad revenue and won't have the budgets to create anything else. I'd be curious to see what AMC is getting in ad revenue for their prime Sunday dramas vs the reality tv shows.

I'm down for a disclaimer for sure, I think that would be fair. I will say that I've never worked on a rigged reality show before. I work on stuff that is produced to be sure, but rigged no. My buddy works on Storage Wars, I'll have to ask him what he saw in his cuts. Not sure if you saw my last response before you wrote yours, but I think we'll have to agree to disagree on that. I believe that their were be far more lighting guys, writers, makeup artists, caterers, set builders, etc that would be unemployed without reality tv's revenue stream. The high price to produce them is not offset by higher rates in advertising. In this day of tivo and DVR, advertisers are not ponying up extra dough to offset rising costs of scripted television. To use the example above AMC also owns WeTV, and my guess would be as goes Bridezillas, goes Don Draper.

Scripted television is not all GOOD. There's a lot of bad scripted comedies and dramas everywhere.

Reality series are not not all BAD.

Pawn Stars -
Teaches you the history of many items which are brought in to be pawned or sold.
Top Chef - I now have a better understanding of fine dining and the work that goes into it.
Amazing Race - I will never go to parts of the world where this is filmed.
So You Think You Can Dance - I've never seen the different genres of dance before this series.
American Idol - I can't stand the show now, but it gave us Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
Project Runway - I never understood fashion until this series.
The Biggest Loser - Watched only last year but it has inspired millions of people to change their lifestyle.

And so on. But here's a list of all reality series: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_reality_television_programs

I believe the first successful reality series was COPS. Nothing fake about that, mind you. I believe "fake reality" is what is hurting the industry. From the onset reality series were real life.

As soon as I see a new show put this season, starting with the "team" of usually 5 but sometimes more, with the slow mo cam on the ground shooting up, and everyone has thier arms crossed...
And then the "interview" cutaways as if everything is in happening in real time. It's been done. To. Death. We get it. The format works but now it's been done to death.
And the drama. Okay, well, I'm not on the poll but I've stopped watching anything that resembles that format. I have PC now. lol.
