Barry Green - Who are you?

I'm always wondering because I'm amazed at the vast amount of information you bring to this board. It seems like you know every aspect of filmmaking from head-to-toe... What do you do for a living? How do you know so much? ...and most of all, can i rent you for productions? ;D

Re: Barry Green - Who are you?

Barry is actually a BOT created by those crazy Canadians. As you know, A.I. has made leaps and bounds and our BOT Barry only goes to show this. IN fact, all of our mods are BOTS. Even me. Except Im a first generation BOT; not real knowledgable but damn I make a good companion and can make a good drink.

Re: Barry Green - Who are you?

I believe Barry has had all the film books ever made downloaded into his memory as well...

Re: Barry Green - Who are you?

I'm a bot as well, they put me on the compression forum because I'm the new compact model.

Re: Barry Green - Who are you?

Is it possible we are all BOTS? Except for DAN LAHAV; I mean us BOTS wouldnt actually question our own existence, much less WHOIS Barry Green, would we? That would be against our programming.

Re: Barry Green - Who are you?

Well I have often wondered 'who is Barry Green' (sounds like a great name for the next DVX user competition) or better, what could this monster of info look like, and what I have seetled for is as Barry Green is all knowing and lives in Vegas, well he now has been attributed Grisam's face in my mind . . . Yes Barry . . . you are the senior CSI!

This question has been asked before, and the answer is: I'm just a guy who spends way too much time reading about, writing about, and working with film and video...

It seems like you know every aspect of filmmaking from head-to-toe...
Except how to raise the money... sigh...  ::)

Seriously, what you said is of course a vast overstatement.  While I may know some things about some things, the depths and breadth of what I don't know is amazing.  I'm constantly learning from this board and others.  I couldn't hold a candle to Oleg in audio, or J_Barnes in electrical, and I wouldn't even want to think about matching style against Matt McDermitt or Neil Rowe... there's so much talent on this board, it's one reason I spend so much time here! :)

What do you do for a living?
I write, shoot, produce and edit film & video projects.  As proprieter of Fiercely Independent Films, Inc., I write screenplays, commercials, and corporate films; produce 'em, and (when budget does not permit hiring a larger crew) I shoot and edit 'em.  Usually I am able to secure a budget large enough to permit hiring a crew, including a talented cinematographer like Pat Kerby (filmmaker58 ), but sometimes the budgets are low enough that I end up doing it all myself.

How do you know so much?
I'm not sure that I do.  I know some things, but not a hundred thousandth of what there is to know.  Hiring specialists is always a luxurious position to be in, because it's amazing how much someone knows when that's all they do.

As far as the things I do know, it just comes from getting older and having been around it for a while, and from a rabid curiosity, and absorbing like a sponge when I've been fortunate enough to work around skilled professionals, as well as reading every book I can get my hands on and then practice, practice, practice, practice, practice.  Plus spending a lot of times on boards like this, interacting with masters like David Mullen and Charles Papert and so many others...

can i rent you for productions? ;D
Most definitely!  That's the business I'm in, after all.  If you think there are ways that I could be of value to your production, just send a PM and let's talk!

a BOT? LoL! ;D

Thanks for answering my questions Barry. You are definately an asset to this board!

Re: Barry Green - Who are you?

Can I see some of your works, Barry?

Being new to the board and all - I would love to check out what you've done with the DVX100a.

Here's a commercial reel, but most of the spots on it are 35mm and 16mm, not much DVX stuff on there yet... the NetDr spots are DVX, but most of the other spots are 35mm or 16mm. I still need to update it, that second NetDr spot was nominated for a regional Emmy and I don't have a title card in there for that one yet.

Oh yeah, the Heritage College pharmacy spot on there is DVX also, but the massage spot was 16mm.

(props to Matt McDermitt for the title cards!)

Re: Barry Green - Who are you?

Barry, what did you use to make the lightsabres? Did you rotoscope them? Also, what lightsource did you use to have the light from the sabres on the actors?

Re: Barry Green - Who are you?

I had nothing to do with the lightsabers, those were done by effects wiz Bart Anderson and his team.  We used colored wooden sticks for the fight scene, then Bart rotoscoped those sabres and added all the glow and light effects.

The glow of the lightsabers, on the faces and the walls, was mostly done in post. We did do some light effects during production, like the green glow from the "Galactic Cooler", but the saber glows were done in post.

There were about 40 of us working on that film, I was just a producer on that one.  Pat Kerby was writer/director/editor and the guy most responsible for how the project turned out.  We had four cinematographers on the set, and the post effects were mostly handled by Bart and Chuck Bejerrano and some other superbly skilled graphics artists.
