I was doing a shoot the other day, we had a 22inch LCD monitor for field viewing. I was a little short on Lighting, My talking head was lacking in available fill light. I happened to turn the monitor (which was very close to the client) towards the them so they could see how they looked. (normally a real no no in my book, but I did it anyway) I was watching my Viewfinder and noticed that the LCD was filling in the light I was lacking. In a really bizzarre experiment based on my accidental lighting discovery, I Pulled up Photoshop, made some solid-colored Full Screen pictures, (mostly a paint bucket of white fill), to create the proper color E-Gell?.
Ponted the thing at the talent, cranked up the back light and brightness on the LCD and Presto!, I had my fill light for the side of the clients face that was rather shadowed.
Changing the color temp was as simple as changing the color of my solid colored picture screen.
I don't know what practical purpose this would have, and am not honestly suggesting you could go out and use LCD monitors as true soft lights, but I thought I would throw it out there for conversations sake. Almost laughably, It actually worked for a Very close Fill light.
....Maybe Dell and Gateway will start selling barndoors and Egg Crates for their monitors, After all, They already come with on board dimmers and endless available gels with a paint program..... he he he.

"it aint the stuff you got, its what you can do with what you have, that keeps you employed. If Two sticks can start a fire, defend you from Vampires, keep a beat for a band or conduct an entire orchestra with one to spare, Imagine what you do if you broke them in four?!..."
