Barn door for the vidled

Recently purchased my Vidled's. Not had a lot of use yet (soon). This crossed my mind. I was thinking of using some black cinefoil and gaffer's tape. I am interested to learn of alternative ideas, although my current plan should be fine.

congrats on the vidled purcharse. whats cinefoil? i cut the sheets of gel that the lite came with in the shape of the lite to where the gel fit around the bottom hotshoe connection and it has holes where the plastic bolts can go thru them. i was thinking of cutting barndoors with the same pattern.

I notice when they do the camera pullbacks on the local news theyve got home made cinefoil barn doors on the lights that are closest to the news anchor desk. Thats on the expensive local news too, they can afford a helicopter but not a barn door.

I've used a big sheet of that stuff on my stand lights as a Flag once so it will definitely work as barn doors...just don't bump into anything moving the camera around! After all its only thick aluminum foil as was already mentioned.

>they can afford a helicopter but not a barn door.

Barn doors alone might not be enough. Lighting news sets require a lot of subtle finesse.

Blackwrap (AKA thick matte black aluminum foil) is an essential part of any toolkit and is used in productions from your no budget indie films to $100 million plus budget films.

I don't think it was the TV crew being cheap, but rather using the blackwrap for things that barndoors sometimes arent good for.

I know that regardless of what kind of project I am working on there are a few things that I *never* ever leave home without:

Blackwrap, Gaff tape, my leatherman, leather gloves, and a wall plug tester.

There are other things that I always like to keep in my kit such as ground adapters, extra AA, AAA, and 9v batteries, paper tape, clothes pins (c-47s), and a tape measure, and various adapters. And while having those can sometimes be essential, I've found the 5 above to be absolutely life savers.

I figured the cinefoil would be thin but thicker than avg foil so i thought i would velcrove two pieces together to thiken it up. would that work?

No. It would get way too hot, it would not be flexible enough, and would not be disposable enough. If you can't get blackwrap, just use regular aluminum foil, the thickest you can get.

You ever take regular aluminum foil you get in the grocery store and completey cover your top barn door with it and kinda angle it upwards. This is will provide somewhat of a bounce - good for doing sit down interviews. Ive seen this demonstrated at a lighting seminar once. The light was on the camera too!
