Barger Baglite GT-3

Re: Barger Baglite GT-3

I think it sounds expensive and hot from the description in your link. I can't attest to what the light might look like, but at close to 2k max output...it seems like overkill to me.

For about $300 + 2 chimeras, you could have two 750 watt totas in softboxes. That might be a lot more useful for some people.

Barnes,

I don't completely undestand what you said:

"For about $300 + 2 chimeras, you could have two 750 watt totas in softboxes. That might be a lot more useful for some people. "

Could you be more specific? I'm very new at this.

Hi all:

A DP that I work with owns a Barger, it's a great light, very intelligently thought out by a professional gaffer. Where else are you going to get a 6k on three household circuits? We have used his Barger for everything from tabletop to interviews to narrative.

Great light for when you need a big, powerful soft source without renting a genny. Also versatile because you can just turn on a single light and get small output for a sensitive DV camera. The DP I know has the GT-6 but they make the GT-3 and a smaller, lighter version called the DV-3. The GT-3 and DV-3 are just basically a half version of the GT-6. Also, Totas out out a ton of heat. These Bargers are built to take a Chimera Softbank without needing a Chimera Speed Ring. I get tired of setting a light with a Chimera and it tilts during the shot because of the weight. Not with the Barger, it has a serious tilt lock...

IMHO, if you are shooting single talking heads, these lights may be overkill but if you are shooting narrative scenes, If you want a tungsten fixture that actually has enough punch to shoot in daylite with dichroics or full CTB, are shooting multiple person interviews or large tabletop setups, the Barger rocks, it's a great piece of gear.

Best,

Dan

Several networks use these to light up their talent during Pre-sport type shows on location. Especially more than one talent... Like introducing the players, and talking about stats before a game, with the stadium/arena behind them. Overkill for MOST interior interviews, but a good product.. Yes, they are HOT...CAUTION<VERBOTTEN<LOOKOUT ! OUCH, WHEW.... Gloves are in order to handle these babies..
I concur with the above suggestions from PureDrifting and JBarnes. On a budget, I would get the version JBARNES suggested. That way, you can put 1 Ik light in a softbox and task the second one for a separation, fill or a background light. My preference would be for you to find a rich uncle to buy you an Arri Softbank IV kit...and a few C-Stands.. lol Or hire me to be your gaffer.
