Barger Bager Lights anyone?

I've been looking into the Barger Bager 6 light. Does anyone here own it or have experience using it? I'm curious about this fixture. I'm a power man, I like my light to have serious output, preferably with little amperage needed. Can't afford HMIs right now (and quite frankly I don't really wanna have to deal with balasts either...) This light looks attractive.

Every set I've been on with one of these has usually has a Chimara mounted on it, if I'm thinking of the right light...great source for a whole lot of soft white light, and it'll warm you up in those cold night scenes too.

Little amperage? Are you sure you want to run the Baglite 6? It's got 6 X 650 watt globes=3900 watts/120V= 32.5 amps, so if you're running it full out you'll need to splt it between three 15 amp circuits. With conventional tungsten lights like the Baglite, what you see is what you get in terms of wattage/amperage. It will have a serious kick though and keep you warm in the winter--very very warm. You'd be hooking it up to a big ass Chimera. I've seen them in studios, but it seems a little like overkill for an indie filmmaker--especially for a single fixture. Maybe you'd like a nice Kino-Flo.

Hi Chris:

A DP that I work with owns one, he has loaned it to me several times. It is a GREAT light, you will love it. They are costly, about $1,650.00 plus a medium Quartz Chimera to go with it is about another $650.00. If you can afford it, it will quickly become your most loved light.

I will buy one someday.

Dan,

Thanks for the input, can I pick your brain a little more?

1.) how does this light perform just on its own, no chimera attached? I know its already using a bunch of smaller broads essentially, but If I put it behind a meat ax thats raised a little bit higher up and hit it off a cieling (think location height, 10-12 foot white or show card covered cielings), what kind of results would I get?

My big deal right now is big ambient light sources for cheap. (In terms of not having to get gennies, or hire electricians to hot tie a breaker box and all the distro gear that it demands, ect...). I'm basically assembling a really lucrative package for serious lower budget independent films and regional/local commercial production work. Anything bigger, and I'll just rent additional stuff (like those 10 and 20K beasts of burden for the really big shots).

2.) When the globes go, do they all go at the same time(assuming you only ever use them all at the same time)? Thats the only turn off for me. Its a very expensive fixture to re-lamp!

3.) Are there any third party barn yard doors? You know, like the really big goofy ones you would find on a 2k open face.

Thanks!

Hi Chris:

1. I guess it would be okay, but the light is REALLY designed to work with a medium or large Chimera, that's what it was invented for. If you are looking to bounce lights off of the ceiling, I would suggest something like buying some used Mighty Moles, relamp with 1500 watt bulbs and go for it. As long as you put them on separate circuits you would be fine. Why buy a $1,600.00 light then use it in a way that it was never intended?

2. No, when the bulbs go, they do not go all at once.

3. No barndoors. All the light has is a flat face and holes on each corner to plug a Chimera into.

Dude, you are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. If you are really intent on just spreading bounced light off of ceilings, why not just punch a couple of Mightys through a shower curtain? Same result but a lot cheaper.

Best,

Dan
