Bar Ambiance!

Hi,

I filmed a bar scene and need to add some ambiance to it (chatter, clinking beer mugs, etc.). Does anybody know where I can get a sound clip of bar
ambiance? If worst comes to worst, I'll sit outside an outdoor bar and get some sound, but would prefer to hear some other clips.
I'm hoping that this is the correct category to post in. Much thanks!

Lets consider now that I got a few hits from the very first thing I searched for on Google. "bar ambience sounds" It's quicker to google a few things yourself before posting here.

I searched for bar ambiance, but the sites I found were either not free, and/or the clips ran too short (even for looping), so I posted here.

Call the tavern you want to record in and find out when their trivia night is (most bars I know of have this on a Monday or Tuesday). Between questions and when the scores are being tallied is a great time to pick up ambient without music...or the guy on the PA.

Cheers

Rather than look for a straight up bar ambience, I'd look for any sort of restaurant walla first, then I 'd look for glass, dinnerware, and silverware stuff to sweeten it up. That freesound website is pretty cool. I just searched it, and didn't come up with any good bar sound, but then I did a search on "walla", and found a bunch of stuff you could use if you layer it up. If none of that stuff works for you, let me know, I bet I have something in my library I could dig up for you.

Awesome advice, everybody. Much thanks! I'll check out those websites. There's an outdoor bar here that I could probably stand outside of (it's a tiki bar).

I'll work on your advice, Dave. If I strike out, I'll get back to you. :-) I have two scenes left to film, and one of the two is tonight. The I'll come back and edit like crazy.

Again, thanks everybody. :-)

Opps, sorry I jumped the gun a bit.

From what I would guess you're looking for 100% legal sounds (from a copyright pov) and you're not 21.

With that in mind I'd say finding free sounds is going to be difficult, since most likely any sounds that say free, are simply ripped versions of sounds that should be paid for. I would say the best bet is to just get a restaurant recording as someone already mentioned. Adding some bar-type music (if you can play it back through a speaker and re-record) and it's not likely many would notice. Possibly recording the sound of a few minutes of you and your friends playing pool would add as well.

There are bar scenes in Terminator 2, Garden State, Hitch, Groundhog Day, X2, and Catch Me if you can right off the top of my head. Watch any of those scenes with your eyes closed and just hear exactly what they put in. One thing you'll notice is that none of them sound the same. That's an advantage of going to a resturant to make the recording, because you'll be able to know the type of atmosphere in there based on where it is, how expensive it is, and what time it is. A pre-made recording doesn't leave a lot of room for making it fit the movie. More of the movie fitting the recording, which should never be the case.

If you are under 21 and can't into a bar then perhaps you could have a friend do it for you. Generally stock walla never is quite what I want. Too many/few people, too big, too small, too many distinctive voices, etc. It is usually so much better and satisfying to get it yourself.

That being said; Hey Dave, you wouldn't happen to have any ambient of a classroom with very quiet whispering, paper & pen russling, in a medium sized, carpeted room? :) I need this and am not looking forward to finding it myself. College hasn't started up and I don't really fit in on campus theses anymore anyways. I read your recent posting on RAMPS so I would be happy to pay for it or trade in kind.

Shot in the dark but figured I would take it.

Cheers

I think I might have some that I pulled from a production track to fill in a gap in a different scene for a feature I did, but it's not carpeted. It's a tile or linoleum floor, so it's pretty reverberant. It's also maybe only 5 seconds long. I remember trying to loop it, and it really didn't work. I got it from a pre-roll off a deva, which I think was only set to 5 seconds. Came in handy, though. I'll see if I can find it.

Nope. It's gone. I did find something else in my library that might work for you. It's about 3 minutes long.
