Ball gag size

Hello Listers,

I am going to choke it up for baby ball gags for my set of octavas. Ball gags come in sizes to fit the mic body. BH has 20, 22, and 25mm listed, and they suggest that they be fit to the body.

So I whipped out my trusty dial caliper and the octava barrel comes in at close to 20mm, no problem. But the caps are larger in diameter, one is 23mm and the other is 24mm, over .100" larger

Finally the question for anyone having this setup: Should I purchase the 20mm unit, will the grommet slide over the larger diameter capsules?

Second question: It seems like there is a pretty fair profit margin in the BBG (in fact, the price makes me gag) at north of $135 + shipping. Is there another more reasonable product which you have found equally successful? Rycote seems like nice stuff, but jeez they are proud of it.

Thanks in advance for your responses,

Best Regards,
Grant

Hello Listers,

One additional question: how far does the mic slip into the BBG? The Octavas are pretty short. When mounted in my shock mounts, the is only about 1.5" left sticking out. Is that enough for the BBG?

To fit, you open the ball gag and push the XLR end of the mic. through the rubber grommet from the inside - you then put on the top. The mic. head needs to be in the centre of the ball.

I must apologize to the list, as all the info I requested was in the archives....dah.
Thanks to John Willet for kindly answering a question which has a long history here without a blast to look in the archives...shame on me.

Maybe now I should ask what a successful $100 sound kit should have in it.....so I could sell some of my gear.
