Bah... upgrading sucks(D70 to...?)

This is more for the people who used to have a D70 and upgraded to a D200
Was saving up for a D200 and a nice VR 80-200 glass to upgrade from my D70.

I shoot ALOT of racing and Fashion Shows. Both of which can either have low light, or go into the night.
But then I've been reading the ISO on a D80 handles much better than a D200. (But I haven't seen many comparisons from users). My little D70 just simply cannot keep up.

Now... The S5 is coming in just a few months.

Was thinking about by-passing the D200 and going straight to the Fuji if it prices under $1800. Fuji cams are my favorite in terms of color, but the specs on this came look awesome. Or perhaps I can wait till the Fuji comes out and see if the D200 price will drop.

What would you guys do?

I'd go for a D200. As a race shooter you probably have your own set of lens kits and Nikkor accessories. Even if the Fuji is cheaper, you'd have to end up buying a whole set of new lenses and other add-ons and will probably end up selling away your Nikkons for pittance. Thats just something to consider.

I'd go for a more mainstream DSLR like a Canon or Nikkon just because they're more established. Then again, I've never used the Sonys/Pentax/Olympus/Fuji SLRs so I dont really know. Have you used a Fuji before?

EDIT: I forgot Fuji uses Nikkor F mounts. Well. I guess that just limits it to my second argument.

Yah, the Fuji color is amazing.
Since it utilizes the Nikkor lenses, I can just toss them onto that. Our of all the digital slr, i like the Fuji color best. But the specs on that S5 look REALLY nice for what I shoot. Which is why I'm torn on the D200.

Heh. I really can't help you here man. Never used Fuji DSLRs. Hmmph. If you really like the colors then go for it! At the very least your lenses wont be wasted heh.

I own both the D200 and the D80 and I will admit that the noise levels at high ISO's are better with the D80, but the camera is much slower than the D200. I have seen some images shot with the D200 at ISO 3200 that have little noise but they also nailed the exposure. I doubt that the new S5 is going to be lower than $1800 but I might be wrong. The D200 is such a fun camera and is well worth the money. There are a ton of customizable features on it that seem to put it in a league of it's own. It can be had from a reputable dealer now for $1500-1550. I would get the D200. If you dont like it sell it. I doubt you will though. Either way you will be happy.

As an owner of the D200 + D50 who is considering walking away from the D200 for the D80 I understand your situation.

There are three major differences between the D200 and anything else:
1. Manual Lens Metering
2. Weather Sealing
3. 5 FPS shooting

If these are important then run with it.

I don't agree with the color comments on the Fuji simply because you can do all that in post.

Ultimately I would say to look at the D200 because it is a tank and completely professional build. Then again, it is a heavy beast (hence why my D50 gets more use) especially with a good piece of glass on it.

Upgrading does suck, but anyone who says that you are going to keep a digital camera 3-5 years...well the technology advances pretty quick.

Regarding noise, the D200 is very similar to the D70 in results, especially at high ISOs. The D50 & D80 are much better, but things I have seen from Fuji line it up with the D200/D70 clan more than the D50/D80.

For racing and fashion where FPS is important you can't beat the D200 with a good f/2.8 piece of glass on the front. Then again, the D50 is more camera than most will ever use.

All of the above are very important.

Ah... but when I get done documenting a 1000-3000 picture week for something, minmizing post is essential. Or even immediately after an event where I have to burn a DVD of pics, post isn't an option. Never-the-less, I am boiled down to a D200 (maybe wait a bit more and consider a D2X). And there is a growing possibility of a Mark II now.

Once again with the post aspect...

I don't know. My problem with the Fuji is it is just slow, and whether I am shooting continuous light in my studio or out at an event, I always shoot burst. Even the D50 is better (speed performance) than the S3.

It's a nice camera, but still.

I think the D200 will suit you great, or if you can make the D80 work for you then you still get a lot of the benefits of the D200 (except you said weather proofing, manual lenses, and 5fps are important).

Go for the D200 and never look back as you're toting around that heavy beast.
