Bag Suggestions

Looking to pick up an audio bag for a SD-302 and a Tascam DR-680. Was looking at the Portabrace bags, but still not real clear on how these combo bags work. The bag they have for the 680 looks well designed, but am I correct in assuming this is modular and has to be paired up with one of the combination case bags?
Would also like to hear any other alternatives such as Petrol or others that might work out.
Thanks

Where are you?

What country are you in?

If you are in the UK then KTS are the best people to talk to.

Their custom bags are excellent and a reasonable price as well.

Are Petrol bags made in Israel? I think so and have heard of some people having difficulties if they take them into an Arab country.

I've got this one for my MixPre and DR-680. There is room for wireless, cans, extra cables etc. You can add a harnedss to balance the bag on your chest/stomach. There are even straps to hold your pole. It's a great bag, and I use it to perminantly house my DR-680 for whatever gig I'm going to. I got tired of bags that were too small. I want my stuff to fit and have room for more, which I always seem to need.

Hey Chadfish, like the looks of the Petrol bag. Kind of large overall, maybe uncomfortable without the harness but I do like the roominess of it. I see the top (or front if you will) zips open, is this how you have your 680, and if so is is pretty quick access to get to the basic top features of the recorder?
Even as weight is concerned, the 302 and the 680 really don't weigh that much at all and it would nice to have other mics, RF kits ready to go, not to mention having adapters on hand.

John, I am located in US in Florida, I went to look at their site but I must not have java installed. Is KTS and Kata the same?

No I have my DR-680 in the main compartment (under the clear vinyl) I keep headphones and a 20' cable in the front pocket, as well as some TRS-XLR adapters for channels 5/6.

Sorry Chadfish, that's what I meant to say...In the main compartment, but on the front of the main compartment under the vinyl so when you unzip it you have access to the top of the Tascam. Am I making sense?
Did you use straight or 90 degree xlrs to feed the recorder?

I was maybe confused because the vinyl window is velcro on both sides. So hes I flip up the window and I am looking at the front of my DR-680, not the top. My mixPre goes "above" that, or rather, outward from that.

Here ya go: You can see that there is a 3rd area between the recorder and me. I keep my power cable and batteries there.

And though this is blurry, you see it with the window closed, and my headphones pouch open:

And so far I just have straight XLR cables. I don't do a lot of booming. Mostly micing up live shows and getting a board feed. So I take the recorder out and set it somewhere, But there is plenty if room for 8 cables to go out the side, or a snake. I just haven't got organized and made it so my recorder can stay in the bag and have short cables stick out to connect to.

OK Got it now! I am in a similar situation as it will be mostly sit down type stuff, not a lot of booming, but even then you could get the 99$ harness if needed. I like the roominess of this bag and may end up going with this.
Anyway I just wanted to say thanks for taking the shots and explaining your set-up.
You are always so helpful to everyone on the forum.
BTW, how are you liking the sd/tascam combo so far. I have a 302 and the 680, but haven't had time to do extensive testing yet.

My pleasure EWS! It is a nice bag. I will get the harness when I'm feeling a little more flush with cash! Also you can take off the wireless pockets. There are 4 and you can take off just the outside ones, or all of them. Lot's of configuration options...

looking for a DR680 + SD302 bag

Chad - Does this bag allow a way to access the controls on the top of the DR680? How about adequate ventilation when using the recorder and mixer while inside the bag? I do a bit of stand up boom work, and need to leave the gear inside the bag.

I used a 302/680 setup (64-day shoot) in a Petrol 607 with duel pouches on either side. (5 wireless and Comtec transmitter.) With the 680 mounted topside, the top panel controls could be accessed fairly easily, however accessing internal batteries required major disassembly.. which is not really an issue with an external battery system (a must have IMO). It was a rather tight fit but heat was never a problem (at least for the gear).. even on 95+ degree high-humidity days in direct sun.

Rick - Thanks for the info on this. I was concerned about heat with a pro-sumer item like the DR680, but it sounds like your gig was as grueling as anything I'd put mine through.

From the photo you posted, it doesn't look like there is any room to access the top controls, but I'll take your word for it.

May I ask what you used for power with your DR680? Did you power both items (302 and 680) with it?

The top flap of the Petrol 607 is zipper and Velcro and folds down from the top. There is however enough room w/o opening it to slip fingers in to access the on/off button, menu and some others (if you know where they are), but there are rarely any changes needed via the top panel during scene-takes.
I used NP1 batteries feeding a BDS power distro bloc which fed the recorder, mixer and three Lectros receivers; two G3s and the Comek were battery powered. BTW, there's plenty of room in other parts of the bag for batteries and such
I did try to shade the (black) top/front panel when I could as it got quite hot at times exposed to direct sun.. never crapped out though.
