I did it twice now accidenatlly. I have a AT 4073a. i'm directing/camreaman/and everything else basically so it's hard to remember to do evrything proper. i figure the 4073a is a solid mic but it's probably not good for it.....?

At $500 I don't want to damage it. Yes, I am very paranoid.

Thanks in advance.

Oleg-
Forgive me but...."no" as in it's not bad to do and won't hurt anything, or "no" are it's not good to do and will possibly damage the mic?

Thanks for listening to the concerns of paranoid non-wealthy moviemaker beginner.

Re: bad to unplug mic w/ phanton power still on?

Boy I'm glad somebody asked this. I've been switching phantom on and off like an air-lock before I use my mics. Meaning "phantom off... change mic... phantom back on"... then to disconnect "phantom off... wait for the signal to fade... unplug mic"...

I guess I was being anal about it. Sometimes I guess I conjure up theories about delicate diaphragms and stuff.

Thanks for the slap in the face I needed.

You know, I hear in my school that it's bad. It surely can be pure neurosis, though. I just don't know if I'm capable of doing it and not feeling guilty (Obsessive compulsive? Maybe.). But I'm glad to know that we're safe from the phantom menace. Using a Beyer with batteries AND phantom on will fry the mic, though. True story.

exept i slept on my booman hands while he did it with my headphones were on my ears and the fader was on it really doesnt matter .
for the schoeps users who might be changing the capsulds -take the mike out or disconect the the mixer otr camera -you can damege the preamp , this advice is good for the octava , akg and neumman as well , never swing the capsul under phantom power on
