Backups!

Well, I've realized after almost losing all my work that backups are a good thing! But as to how to do it is a whole 'nother question.

I'm thinking about just buying 2 500 gig drives, one being the one I work on, and the other as a backup. But the problem is once I fill up both, what will I do with that data for long term storage? Harddrives don't really last forever so it's not like I can really just keep buying these things. And at this point I'm kinda against dvds as it makes me break up my projects into multiple disks(wheres blu-ray when you need it!)

Now I'm just thinking I really don't have much of a choice and its going to be either one of these. Does anyone have any experience with tape backups? I'm sure its slow as molasses when you're reading it back, but I would think they would have a lifespan thats much better that than dvds and harddrives.

I'd be more than happy if you could shed some light on this situation, tell me how you do it maybe and I could get some ideas.

The key to backing up is making sure you have your NLE files backed up. I can recreate clips as long as I have the Premiere Pro file (I can just do a batch capture of the missing clips as long as I still have the masters).

Another way I back up project data is to try and keep clips of less than 4.7 gigs in size. Then I can create a bunch of data DVDs of the files.

Anyone else?

Yeah, I'm trying to keep my files in 4.7 gig blocks, but its a pain in the butt sometimes. I just filmed a 2 hour play and because I need them backed up I have to capture 20 minutes at a time which is no fun at all.

I can't believe I didn't think of just keeping the NLE files and deleting the raw footage. Does anyone else have any other ideas as to how to go about this though?

I work with premiere pro, but it's about the same for every NLE
I use NTbackup for all files that I can't recapture (so all video files, rendered files and conformed audio files are left out), I have it scheduled to run everyday at 7am.
other than that I backup finished projects to DVDs after trimming them, so I don't need to recapture if the client wants small changes or another copy
