Backround noise and hiss.....please.....

So apparently I've wasted my money on an atr55 as I wasn't part of this site yet a few weeks ago when I bought the damned thing. But now I have it and I can't afford to get another one. So here's the probem I have it hooked up to my dvx100b and when the mic is set to normal mode the "hiss" or "white noise" is unbelievable. It sounds crazy crazy lound. There has to be something wrong because while this mic is apparently lame it certainly has to be at least audible and better than the onboard mic. When the mic is set to the tele function the hiss is less loud but still unacceptable. Far worse that the noise of the onboard mic. I have it hooked up through the xlr cable with an adapter in input 2 and both channels set to input 2 so it comes through on both. The normal setting doesn't really even pick up sound unless you speak directly into thhe mic and the tele is definitely not picking up "tele" anything. Any advice please would be much appreciated. Thanks......

Hello thewill,
you seem to start a new thread with each thought about your ATR55.
It's kind of common etiquette to continue the discussion WITHIN the same thread.

BTW, what are your settings:

Front of cam: input 1/2: mic/line?
Behind LCD: Phantom power on/off?
ATR55: battery installed? yes/no?
Cable: what kind of cable adapter do you have?

sorry about the new threads. my mistake.

front of cam input 1 is set to mic input 2 to mic
i don't even know what phantom power behind the lcd is. is it mic power +48v? if so they are both set to on.
channnel 1 and channel 2 are both set to input 2
the mic has a battery installed
the cable adapter connects the small single pin at the end of the cable to a larger single pin. then that pin goes into an xlr three pin adapter that plugs into the input 2 on thhe camera

thank you for your kind help

Will

Again, to avoid confusion and all the turnarounds, I'd return it and get something else. Where did you buy it, anyway? They should be able to help you.

Yup, take it back if you can man! I know thats not what you want to hear, but im afraid its true! :)

At least, like Dave says, they could help you troubleshoot this faster than we can over the net.

yeah, you should either use a battery for your mic or the phantom power, not both. If for some reason you can't or don't want to return your mic, try either taking out the battery or switching the +48V off. Having both may be what is causing your mic to sound worse than it is. I would say you should try to return it though.
