Anyone know of an actual backpack or DIY method for a backpack that allows the DVX100 to be Horizontal?

yep, I was thinking of finding a bag and adding some sort of arm straps to it....kinda ugly I'm sure, but if I can't find anything, I'm gonna try a DIY backpack.

I tried my High Sierra Sonic Messenger backpack and the DVX100B fits in the bottom of it (horizontally w/matte box) with the viewfinder in the up position. This is okay for now, but I'd feel better with having a camera backpack made to specifically carry a video camera (esp. the DVX100/a/b) horizontally.

Here's a link to it at ebags.com http://www.ebags.com/high_sierra/sonic_messenger/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=12763

Right now it's on sale for $42.49 if you're interested. NOTE, that you will need to pad it with something to protect it.

There seems to be an issue as to whether or not pressure is put on the lens/view finder when the camera is vertical with the lens either facing up or down.

there shouldnt be a problem with it in the pack vertical or pack makers wouldnt have made them that way :). i have done it many times when i used to use a lowepro pack with no problems and many here use backpacks as well with no problems. i usually tend to face the camera downwards.

wut i do, is if i go sky diving, i just hold the dvx in my arm, let it drop, and then go catch it, so i dont need bags

Hey, Carmen.....

I also wanted to 'go horizontal' with my backpack. With the costs of padded cell foaming, cordura, other materials and the stitching, it didn't make much sense to DIY this one. A local eBay'er handles LowePro bags, so I got this for cheap and there was no shipping. Plus, I got to check the bag out (with my DVX) at a local camera store that carried them. Their mark-up was pretty steep.

Forgive the pics as it's after four in the morning here and I don't have any with the bag-in-use. I needed this for a one-man shoot hiking into canyon country around Moab, Utah. The bag was $100 (retails for more) and the backpack straps were $20 (usually $28).

It's a LowePro Magnum A/W (All-Weather). The backpack straps attach to the bag and there you go. I added a military MOLLE (pronounced 'Molly') hip belt to the exterior belt loops for extra support. There's no stitching or any work required. You can find MOLLE gear for cheap at a military surplus store. This one cost $7.

There are plenty of pockets and padded dividers to customize it however you want. LowePro has either a "Video" or "DV" version but I believe you're just paying more for them to arrange the interior compartment for you. Lose the straps (or leave them on) and it'll fit easily under an airplane seat. There are plenty of external straps to attach a small-ish tripod. I use a little Bogen when I have to put everything on my back.

The viewfinder is able to always be in the 'down' position with plenty of protection. I've even fit the camera in with a Cinetactics Matteblox HD still secured. So, there's some room but not so much that it's moving around at all.

Again - these pictures don't do it justice as it has worked out very nicely. Good luck!

The Crumpler Zoomiverse XL and Pyjama Pride L will fit it horizonatal and it is fully padded. It will fit all you other stuff too. and you can take out the mash with the DVX still inside and use it like a normal back pack.

Only thing is that it is a Europe model. You can't buy it in the states, unless you import it.

Thanks, I'll look into getting one of these they look great!

Crumpler make really good bag. Its water proof and gets a life time warranty. I got so far 4 different bags from them.

Just to tell you how water proof it is. I had a bottle of water once in my Crumpler back pack. The cap kind of got lose while iIwas carring it the whole day. When I open up, my bag was swimming with water :bath: and I didn't even notice a drop coming out from the bottom of the bag.
