backing up project and external hd...how do i do it?

Please help I'm going to go out and get another 300gb external harddrive to backup my 23 hrs of original material. When I captured the material for a while I had my mac hd as the capture scratch before i noticed and set my g-drive as the capture scratch. Therefore some of the footage for my project is on the mac hd while the rest (the majority) is on my g-drive. I want to back all of it up onto one external drive. Is this easy to do? Are there simple settings? Please help time is slipping away and I worry that as I near the end of the project I don't have it backed up.

THANKS!

The one beauty of the FCP workflow is that the files are all just easy to find/copy/whatever quicktime movie files. All you have to do is create whatever folder/folders you want the media to be in on your new external hard drive. Then drag and drop from the other drives to that one and voila, it'll copy over for you, no worries. If you're already content with the folder names then just drag and drop them from the current drives to the new one.

Backup your project file as well (to a CD-R preferably, cause if the drives fail, having the project file on the drives won't do you any good).

Then you're backed up. If the other drives have issue you can just do a quick reconnect to the new/backup drive and be off and running again in just a few seconds.

cheers.

Not to be too slow but how do I backup my up my project files. Do I drag my saved project icon that is currently on my desktop to my blank cd-r?

Also when I go into my garbage I see all kinds of fcp icons. Why? Are they safe to get rid of?

Thanks.

Hi Ralph. Yep the Project file is just one file. The same one you double click on to open your project. That file essentially contains all your "in" and "out" transition etc information that is in your porject. It won't be a large file at all.

As for the files in the trash. They are most probably renders you have deleted from your timeline. FCP will throw them away to save you disk space.

Also for copying projects that might have clips or media in several folders or hard disks I would suggest using the Media Manager. It will make a copy of all your clips in the project and place them orderly into a folder you specify. Be careful though, if you are NOT familiar with the Media Manager, I probably wouldnt recommend it since it is also used to trim media and projects, which means you could loose clips if you don't use it properly!

Good luck!
