Backing up Edit Master

Just wanted to find out how you folks were backing up your edited master that would be able to be downloaded back into the system. (Vegas 5) other than tape. Do you put in on DVD and rip it back to a AVI file. Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: Backing up Edit Master

I save it as data on a DVD. Sometimes multiple DVDs, when necessary.

Someday you'll be able to do it on flash media.

Re: Backing up Edit Master

You do this. Go buy yourself a Rev Drive and start buying Rev Disks. You can compress up to 96 GB's on a Single Rev Disk. You can backup your whole project to be further edited later on those disks. 96 GB's should usually be enough per project, maybe not a whole movie, but you can always use more than 1 disk!

Re: Backing up Edit Master

A note about the advertised compression of the REV drive: captured video files are already compressed so do not expect to fit 90GB of video on a 35GB media. In this case 35 G is 35G. It's another story if you are archiving text documents or let's say uncompressed photoshop files.

(update)
"The REV drive is shipped in a USB 2.0 external version ($400) and an ATAPI internal version ($380). One disk is included with the drive, additional REV disks are available for a price of $60, or in a four-pack for $200."

At the price of $50 per 35 GB ($0.70/GB) this is not a very attractive offer if you consider archiving to DVDs (around $0.15 / GB). Of course archiving on multiple DVDs could be a pain.
(end of update)

Also a question on DVD archiving: I have experienced problems (drive errror when trying to read the file) whenever I record large (over 1.5GB) files on a DVD-R. It seems that the format has limitzation on the size of any solid file - maybe this is why DVD files get broken into 1.5GIG chunks.

Has anyone had success in writing and successfully reading a solid large video file (larger than 2Gigabytes)?

I guess that depends on what you're asking. Do you mean writing to a DVD and playing it straight from there? Read speeds, in my experience, are way too slow.

But I haven't had a problem saving 4GB files to a DVD and reloading them back to my PC.

Re: Backing up Edit Master

So it seems that saving it as a data file would be the way to go. If you do save it as AVI on a DVD, how many min of footage can you expect to be able to store?

Re: Backing up Edit Master

I work into my bid a "digital archive" fee. This covers a separate drive for the customer's media. Everything is kept on this drive. When done, I pull it out of the ADS case and put it back in the foil wrapper and on a shelf.

I also back up the .veg files, audio and any other images on CD. I hate the time to recapture from tape but do so on occation. If budget permits, I go the hard drive route.

Thx for the replies all. Think I will stick with the DVD backup for the time being.
