Background hiss or humm

Anyone know an easy way to reduce the background hum in FCP 4 from a interview piece I filmed for a documentary? I used one shotgun Mic on channel 1 and 2 with the input volume equal. I can really hear the difference from the music track to when the interview audio pops on.
Any suggestion would be great.
Thanks!!

i don't have soundtrack yet, so i don't know if it has something like i'm about to describe.

download audacity. (it's a pretty good freeware audio editing app.) it has an effect called something like "noise remover." export a track of just the interview vocals as an aiff from fcp. make sure you include several seconds of the hum without any speaking (you can go and turn this part down later.) the way the filter works is- you play the "noise only" section of the clip and stop the playhead on a section with just noise. then you select something like "get profile" from within the noise remover filter. what this does is it analyzes the hum part and figures out what frequency it's happening at. then you select the entire clip and apply the filter to the whole thing. adjust the strength of the filter. if it's on full tilt, things sound kinda weird, with all sorts of resonant artifact stuff going on. but you can usually find a decent balance with some pretty good noise reduction and no really noticable artifacts.

anyhow, just re-import the doctored track and line it up with the bad one as a sync guide. then turn off the bad one.

sorry i'm a little weird on the specific names of stuff. i don't have audacity on this machine, and premiere pro/audition has a similar filter, so the naming gets confusing. i'm pretty sure soundtrack pro has similar stuff as well, and i'm guessing it's pretty good since it uses the logic effects. i'll find out soon when i get it.

Thanks. I have Soundtrack and never thought to import my clip in and see if I can tweak it from there. I will give that a try tonight.

Anyone know a way to do this right in Final Cut?

Appreciate your response.

That worked perfect. I did have to upgrade to Soundtrack Pro but it is a great feature to have.
Thanks!
