Background Focus

I need to place only half of the background out of focus while the rest stays in focus. I have a news report where we are going to have monitors over her left shoulder, we want this out of focus. Over her right shoulder we are going to place a Green Screen to chroma key in part of a Master Control Room; As you can see, I need the Green Screen to be in focus but want the monitors out of focus. Is this possible? (We would shoot the Master Control Room out of focus, to match the monitors.)

If not, what can I use to place the background out of focus after chroma key in post?

Wouldn't you want the green screen to be soft anyway? Whatever you key onto it will still be in focus.

If you have control over this set you could bring your subject and screen further forward (away from the practical monitors).

I was just thinking an out of focus Green Screen wouldn't key well.

I think, if I understand your question correctly, that I would have three layers to this shot and shoot the elements you need in and out of focus as you wish using green.

Yeah what Mino said. If I'm following correctly, you'd just shoot the actor on green. That way you can key EVERYTHING the way you want it. You're already keying half the screen. It will probably be easier just to key the whole thing.

I guess that would be the best way..... shoot the master control out of focus,..... monitors out of focus ( left side left with green screen.) still leaves me with the problem of an out of focus green screen. Although,........ I don't really need it, since the talent will block the shift from master control to monitors, so i can do a side-by-side composite of the two, Master Control to open area left of Monitors. Then lay in Master Control over said open area. Then shoot Talent, and key in the composite.

Actually, an out-of-focus green screen keys BETTER, because it's more uniform (wrinkles and imperfections get smoothed out, etc.). You just need to worry about keeping what you don't want keyed in focus.
