Back up drive for safekeeping?

Hi there, I'm a bit confused about the difference between making a "backup" and "copy" of a drive. I'm trying to make a protective copy of my main scratch drive which has all of my raw files and project timelines...
Can someone offer a very simple bullet point list of how to do this.

many thanks!!!!!!

In certain contexts you might need to restore all files and structure, such as for an operating system. Some files have attributes that restrict their visibility or accessibility for which a simple copy process might fail. Another aspect is versioning - if you need the capability to recover as of a point in time that might dictate how the files are copied and stored. For your particular case you need to know/decide what criteria apply for your case. If you just have some files you need to protect against loss (e.g. your 2013 footage) then copying those to an external drive might solve your problem.
