B&W People in a Color World

Ok, can anyone please tell me the best possible way to create a B&W person in a color enviroment, ie. Pleasant Ville. Im guessing having the image doubled then adding a traveling matte in After Effects to the shape of the person on the above image and disaturating it. I havn't yet tried it, but I'm guessing its going to look very strange around the edges, probably flicker. I would say green screen, but we dont have the access nor do the traveling shots allow.
Does anyone out there have the answer! Again I want it to look as natural as possible. (Besides the no color thing)

um, theres really a few ways of pulling this off correctly.

1. Rotoscoping, frame by frame masking.
2. Greenscreen/Bluescreen.

PleasantVille used rotoscoping. It's a lot of work and requires lots patience. good luck!

My only experience in creating a traveling mask for a special effect was using Final Cut's matte tool. Im guessing After Effects can pull it off much better and smoother?

AE would be better but if you haven't tried Commotion Pro, it does a better job rotoscoping because of their advance beizer tools. Practice :)
