B&W noise

Does anybody find their footage excessively noisy if they go to black and white?

I was planning on doing my next project in B&W, but when doing some test footage, I'm seeing a lot of noise when I desaturate, or use MB. Gaussian blurring doesn't seem to help too much.

Nope.

My last film was shot on a DVX100A and then desaturated in post (as well as upping the contrast) to black and white. I thought the black and white stuff looked great. Perhaps it's because I turned my master pedistal down and upped the contrast in post so noise in the darker areas turned to pure black.

Sure there was noise, especially in underlit scenes, but not any more than I'd see in color.

With Master Ped at -7 and high contrast Magic Bullet B&W applied, I had very low noise in my picture as long as it was properly exposed.

well, i've turned my ped down to -6, and i've conjured up a MB preset that's working out really well. It's my theory that the noise I was seeing nearly disappears when I add the slightest bit of color. I tweaked the crap out of the MB bleach bypass, and I've got some good results.

i've noticed that when you go to black and white by completely lowering the saturation (i'm working in after effects) the image is grainy. what i do now to achieve a cleaner black and white picture is to shift all the color channels to luminence, this yields a much cleaner image and the grey values are a little different than the previous method.... i don't know why this is.
