Azden SGM-2x

I've been spending time over the last several months learning quite a bit from this forum so, to begin with, thanks to everyone. This is one of the best forums around.

Now after sucking up, on to the question: Does anyone have any experience with, or an opinion on, the Azden SGM -1 or -2x? It would be used primarily indoors as an overhead boom.

Thank much!

Not rude at all, I appreciate the reply. I thought I covered the search and stickies but I guess I need to dig deeper.

Thanks again,

Glen

Yankee, you were much more polite than I was going to be. I was going to take an Oleg-like position and say "Crap!". IMHO, mixing the words Azden and microphone is like mixing oil and water.... As much as I hate the ME66, I would recommend it before I would recommend an Azden mic (and my feelings on this come from first hand experience...a film I mixed early in my career had an Azden shotgun, and it was that project that made me insist that I now only work with my equipment. If I can't work with my equipment, I don't do it. ;-) (Yes, I know I sound like a spoiled child....but if my name is going in the credits, I want to know that I am producing the best sound I can...with control over everything I can.)

Phil

P.S. And no, this is not a recommendation for the ME66. The same rude word applies.

My feelings about the ME series are well known (and if you want to know them do a search), but I've gotten decent results with that microphone. I've bought that mic more times than I can count, and I promise everyone here, I will buy it again before the end of the year. I don't know what it is with me and that mic, it's like crack, I keep coming back to it, hating it, and then coming back to see if my feelings have changed.

Azden though? It's garbage. With so many better mics in the immediate price range as that microphone why you would purchase one boggles the mind. On top of that, to ask if it is acceptable for interior use just proves you haven't searched before you ask.

Either way, we're preaching to the choir here so I'm gonna go take my dog for a walk.

And yet, if you go into RAMPS and ask the same thing, you won't get a "it's junk" answer.

Personally, I like mine just fine. A little bassy, so I use the rolloff, but other than that? No probs.

I have my opinion on the Azden, but if you're getting good results using the mic then more power to you.

I have said before and I will continue to maintain that gear will only get you 25% of the quality you want, the rest is technique, ingenuity, and application. If you are getting good results with the Azden and are satisfied with the overall quality of the performance of the product, then stick with it. Personally I don't like the sound, but that is a personal preference.

I use an Azden mic. and have been pretty ok with the results. I know there are better out there but I needed something cheap when I got it. I hope to get something more solid in the future. I've had pretty good success with the Azden, and it does need a bit of EQ work in post, but what mic doesn't?

the 416. damn i love that thing.

well, ok, to be fair, yes you have to eq everything. but some mics really do put you a lot closer to perfection without you trying too hard.

i used to use a really crummy voice over mic to do my VO's. I used to eq the hell out of them and they sounded fine. then i got an re20, and a decent room treatment, and now VO's come straight from the mic sounding hot. now i eq THAT, and end up with AWESOME sounds.

i guess its that whole "you can only make something one step better" thing- like "awful" can only be transformed to "bad" in post, but "good" can be made "excellent".
