Axio LE may not support DVCPRO HD in all forms

Just called a dealer inquiring about the Axio LE card and described my computer system and that I want to use it on footage shot on an HVX200.

Unlike the Axio SD and HD, they will sell the card without a computer attached and that makes me happy.

He told me that the LE version of the card doesn't support the HVX 24P mode as of yet but will support 1080i and that makes me sad.

I have to go to work, but if anyone can pester your local dealer for more info, I'd appreciate it!

Looking at the specs, the Axio LE seems to do everything that an HVX owner would need!

I'm confused.

I've been watching the LE development as well. Currently, it WILL NOT do any p2 MXF file management. Which means you can not even open the files. However, rumor has it that Matrox is working on adding P2 MXF functionality this year.

I certainly am hoping so.

Looking at the specs, Axio doesn't really do anything the HVX owner would need. No MXF support means no tapeless workflow, you'd have to "capture" all your footage live from the cards. Which means no offloading in the field either.

I don't really get the appeal of the Axio; you could take $3,000 of that $5,000 and buy a decent Mac system and have full-screen realtime performance that works in all modes and all input systems, or spend the cash on an Edius system. Axio seems to not really support the HVX at all. It supports DVCPRO-HD over firewire, which means it's okay for editing from tape from the AJ-HD1200A deck, but for an HVX user Axio doesn't look like the right product at all.

At least not in its current form.

Huh. Scratch off Axio.

Canopus then... Spoke with Tech Support and Edius Broadcast would work fast on my compuer without hardware support because it uses the computer's processors to work the timeline. Sounds like this might be the solution for me when I start doing HD during the summer. I'd LOVE to hold off buying a new computer until Windows is 64bit and dual cores are a little faster.

I would still need a card to export, maybe Canopus, Maybe Aja. Or, I could buy one of those big Dell monitors and give my wife one of my 20" widescreens....

Barry: I am still anxious to hear what your test results are with Edius Broadcast.
