AX10 footage, Vegas to master file, to YouTube... What format, codecs, etc?

Shot footage on the Canon AX10 camera. 1920 X 1080, Progressive.

Need to eventually render a video for YouTube.

Vegas can barely preview it, and any pics on the timeline are too small, fuzzy, aspect ratio thrown off, so I set the project properties to HDV 720 24p. IDK if that's the best to render from, or not. Vegas still lags and can't preview smoothly.

Anyhow, here are my questions:

1. What is the best file (and codec) to render my finished 'master file,' for archiving? I assume an .avi? If so, what codec? I've tested a few on a small segment, and can't even watch the video w/ the players I have.

2. What is the best way to render into a YouTube format, while of course keeping quality high, size low? (I have Sorenson Squeeze, or at least I used to; having trouble opening, as it says it can't find my serial number. Guess that's what I get for actually buying it)

1) Avid DNxHD. You'll have to download the codec if you don't have it. It's free.

2) AVCHD (Sony AVC or MainConcept AVC).

Vegas 8 is not particularly good with AVCHD footage. It was optimized with Vegas 9.

Have an AMD quad-core 3.2GHz, 4GB RAM, WinXP.

Playing w/ the demo of Vegas 9, the footage doesn't play any smoother than Vegas 8, even at preview 'Draft, Quarter.'

Oh well, whatever. Don't have time to waste messing w/ the technical hassle. Will just struggle through.

Ok, so long-story-short, I had to end up rendering to (IIRC) an .avi, HDV 24p Intermediate, 1440 X 1080.
(video file properties list 1440 X 1080, 23fps, 16-bit, 6631 kbps, MS-YUV)
I then used Sorenson (got it working) to render to mp4 for YouTube.

The edited video on the timeline was ~ 22min, and it took around 3.5 hrs to render. So over 10X render time as video time length.

Anyhow, I want to make 2 small corrections... so instead of re-rendering the whole thing, thought I'd drop the finished .avi above onto the timeline, make those 2 small tweaks using the original footage at those fixes, then re-render that way...
...after all, when working in Vegas in the past like this, it would usually say "No Compression Required" and would speed through the render where working w/ a congruent, already-rendered video format.

But it's not doing that here. It wants to re-render the whole damn thing! Granted, it's not taking 3.5 hrs... under 2hrs it looks like... But still, why is it re-rendering the .avi at all?

I set the project properties to match the rendered .avi.
I'm rendering out to that same format.
Not sure why it needs to re-render anything but those 2 small tweaks?
